HOMECOMING QUEEN was a shock winner of the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket but bids to show that was no fluke in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh today.

The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor attempts to become only the third filly to complete the Newmarket-Curragh 1,000 Guineas double when she faces seven rivals in the Etihad Airways-sponsored Classic.

Only Attraction in 2004 and Finsceal Beo in 2007 have won both races and Homecoming Queen, a 25-1 shot when winning by nine lengths at Newmarket, is hot favourite to deliver trainer Aidan O’Brien a sixth win in the fillies’ Classic.

Ground conditions will be very different today and her trainer said: “The going will be a lot quicker than it was at Newmarket and we’ll have to see how she handles it. She has won on good ground although she handles easy ground very well.”

The master of Ballydoyle also runs After and Ishvana and victory would mean him breaking Vincent O’Brien’s record of 27 Irish Classic wins.
