Capannelle: 129th Derby Italiano Better (Group 2) 1m3f, turf, 3yo colts & fillies

UK-based rider Rab Havlin partnered German-trainedFeuerblitz (Michael Figge) to win Sunday’s Derby Italiano, while Frankie Dettori could trail in only sixth on the warm favourite Real Solution.

Dettori said after the race: “Real Solution was quite excited in the paddock and after the parade he seemed to lose the plot, he sweated, was excited. He pulled hard in the race and was a spent force 500 meters from the finish.”

Havlin had settled Feuerblitz in midfield and made good ground to challenge the leader Wild Wolf approaching the final furlong.

Thepair of them went to it toe-to-toe throughout the final furlong, with Feuerblitz prevailing close home to beat the determined Wild Wolf by a short neck, with a length and a quarter back to Smoking Joe in third.

The winner was paying acompliment to German Derby hope Black Arrow, who had slammed him three and a half lengths in a Hanover trial at the end of April.
