01/01/2026. Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum remembered as a giant of global racing and breeding

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum, a cousin of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and one of the most influential owner-breeders of the modern era, has passed away.

For decades, his instantly recognizable yellow and black silks were a familiar sight at the sport’s highest level. From High-Rise’s Derby triumph to the exceptional Postponed, who captured the Coronation Cup, Juddmonte International and Dubai Sheema Classic, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s horses consistently performed on the world’s biggest stages. More recently, elite performers such as Rosallion, a brilliant Group 1-winning miler, and his close relative Inisherin, a top-class Group 1 sprinter, carried that legacy forward. As recently as last month, the homebred Royal Champion added further lustre with victory in the Bahrain Trophy, underlining the enduring strength of his breeding operation.

While the racecourse achievements alone would define a remarkable career, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s deepest and most lasting impact may lie in the breeding shed. He was the breeder of Zomaradah, the dam of the influential stallion Dubawi, a contribution that continues to shape pedigrees around the world. In more recent years, Reem Three emerged as another cornerstone of his legacy, reinforcing his reputation for developing elite female families that stand the test of time.

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al Maktoum’s influence on international racing and breeding spans generations. Through champions on the track and blue-hen mares off it, his imprint on the Thoroughbred will endure long after his silks have been carried for the final time.
