Our betting editor Keith Melrose has had his say on how history sees Gold Cup hero Inothewayurthinkin’s chances in the Grand National. . .

Have you ever seen a horse as short as 5-2 for the Grand National? You have now. 

Paddy Power are typically first out the traps with ante-post prices, and that was their initial reaction to Inothewayurthinkin’s win in the Gold Cup. It is understandable. He has just deposed the greatest staying chaser of his generation at Cheltenham, and is in the National off a mark of 160.

Like 5-2 shots in the National, Gold Cup winners going to Aintree have few recent precedents. Synchronised (BHA rating 161) went off 10-1 after he won the 2012 Gold Cup. Garrison Savannah won the Gold Cup in 1991 and was beaten off 157 at Aintree. Even Rough Quest, second in the 1996 Gold Cup, was running off just 152 when he went one better in the Grand National.

Of course, the National course is a different beast now to when any of those horses ran. A horse with a clear form edge has less in their way, quite literally. 

We came to Cheltenham today hoping to see the third leg of a historic treble. What we might have seen instead was the first part of a double not achieved since Golden Miller in 1934.
