MONTJEU’S LEGACY SHINES ON AT CHELTENHAM & BEYOND

By Emma Berry

There are few areas in which any stallion can topple Galileo (Ire).

It was only last year, however, that the champion sire drew level with his erstwhile studmate Montjeu (Ire) by number of Derby winners. The two sons of Sadler’s Wells now have four apieceCand one Derby-winning paternal grandson eachCbut Montjeu was much quicker off the mark in this field and, following his death in 2012, he has not been represented by Classic-generation runners at Epsom in the last three years.

As the Cheltenham Festival begins its four-day run today, there will doubtless be a number of examples throughout the week which prove that it is a fine line that runs between decent middle-distance performers on the Flat and top-class National Hunt prospects. Almost inevitably, Montjeu has augmented his Classic record by compiling a pretty noteworthy legacy over jumps. His own best representative in this regard has been Hurricane Fly (Ire), a listed winner on the level in France whose phenomenal record over hurdles includes two Champion Hurdle titles among his 22 Grade 1 victories. Montjeu has also been represented at the Cheltenham Festival by the G2 Jewson Novices’ Chase winner Noble Prince (Ire), himself a former decent Flat horse in France for Andre Fabre, and G1 JCB Triumph Hurdle winner Ivanovich Gorbatov (Ire)…

Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) will be taken away from Jason Servis and turned over to Bob Baffert, owner Gary West said in a statement released early Tuesday.

West said that all the horses he has under Servis’s care will be moved to new trainers. Servis is among 27 individuals who were indicted Monday by the District Attorney for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan, as part of a wide-ranging investigation into doping. Servis and trainer Jorge Navarro were the two most notable names involved in the probe.

West’s statement read: “Yesterday, Jason Servis, a trainer we have used for five years was indicted on multiple charges regarding using an illegal substance in horses. This news is extremely disturbing and disappointing. Therefore we will be moving all our horses from Jason Servis as soon as arrangements can be made with other trainers. Maximum Security will be sent to Bob Baffert.”

In addition to the statement, West said the following in an e-mail to the TDN: “My statement represents all I know at this time; you would never ask me to, but I will not speculate or guess at anything–I hope you understand.”

Baffert has trained several top horses for West, who also employs Steve Asmussen.
