American Pharoah’s Arqana May Topper Earns Rising Star Tag at Saint-Cloud

By Sean Cronin

Ocean Atlantique (American Pharoah) bettered a $275,000 tag at last year’s Keeneland September sale when knocked down for a sale-topping €1.1-million at Arqana’s May Breeze-Up sale and shaped with promise in his Sept. 18 debut tackling one mile at Saint-Cloud last time. Confronted by eight in his return over the same course and distance Wednesday, the bay went postward with market confidence and returned as a new TDN Rising Star after dominating overmatched rivals in emphatic style. The 7-10 favourite was sharply into stride and seized immediate control. Holding sway throughought, he was nudged along soon after turning for home and lengthened ever clear under mild coaxing in the closing stages to dismiss Sexy Man (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) by an impressive eight lengths, becoming the 16th winner for his freshman sire (by Pioneerof the Nile).

Ocean Atlantique is the second scorer from three runners produced by an unraced half-sister to three black-type winners headed by MGISW sire Leroidesanimaux (Brz) (Candy Stripes) and G1SW sire Uapybro (Brz) (Blush Rambler). The April-foaled bay is kin to a yearling colt by Quality Road and a colt foal by Unions Rags and his dam Tare Green (Giant’s Causeway) was bred back to Union Rags this year. His second dam Dissemble (GB) (Ahonoora {GB}) is an unraced half-sister to storied blue hen Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and to the dams of G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) and MGSW sire Three Valleys (Diesis {GB}).

This will be followed by a day and a half of breeding stock, with the five day November Sale concluding with 204 Part 2 foals on Friday 22 November.
The catalogue boasts an impressive sire profile headed by Dark Angel, Dubawi, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Lope De Vega, Sea The Stars and Siyouni amongst many others, with highly anticipated first foals from the crops of Almanzour, Caravaggio, Churchill, Decorated Knight, Galileo Gold, Highland Reel, Mondialiste, National Defense, Postponed, Profitable, Ribchester, Time Test, and Ulysses. Siblings to black type winners feature prominently throughout and are headed by the own brother to the November Sale topping Group 1 winner Ghaiyyath.

A sale with something for everyone, Goffs November Sale proved to be fertile ground for pinhookers once again this year, with the 2019 yearling sales season seeing a number of impressive touches. At the Orby Sale examples included a €56,000 foal that developed into a €525,000 yearling, €58,000 that evolved into €400,000, and €65,000 to €300,000 to name just a few.

Goffs November Foals also deliver in style on the racecourse, with world class winners in every crop.  Throughout the 2019 and 2018 seasons there has been a host of Group and Grade 1 winners around the world, headed by catalogue cover star Ghaiyyath who became the world’s second highest rated horse following a 14 length victory in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden. A record breaker at this sale in 2015, Ghaiyyath is a perfect example of the quality on offer for end-users at Goffs in November. Other recent Grade 1 graduates of the November Foal Sale include last year’s Irish Derby winner Latrobe who was back to Group winning ways this season, as well as Grade 1 Natalma Stakes winner La Pelosa and Glorious Empire who won the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga.
