Nobody quite knew what to expect from Juddmonte’s TDN Rising Star Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Friday’s G1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket and despite showing greenness, there was no shortage of spirit and class as she grasped victory from the jaws of defeat with a small amount of authority from Powerful Breeze (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). Left behind and seemingly in trouble as that G2 May Hill S. winner went for the kill passing the two-furlong pole, the 9-4 favourite responded to Jason Watson’s driving to narrow the gap heading up the rising ground and reel her in close home for a head success, with Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 1 1/2 lengths back in third. “She’s out of this world–it’s only her third run and she’s never gone a gallop like that before,” Watson said of the homebred relative of Three Valleys (Diesis {GB}) who was a nine-length winner of the “Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises” Conditions S. at Newbury last time Sept. 20. “Newmarket is not the easiest place to deal with and I couldn’t thank her enough for getting me out of trouble. She was tough and battled it out.”

Connections of Quadrilateral may have been in some ways in the dark when it came to how she would fare in such company, there was a powerful hint that they believed they were dealing with something special as they took the plunge to supplement alongside Powerful Breeze. As it turned out, the pair dominated the finish with the difference being the finishing kick that eluded the strong-staying Irish pair of Love and Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}). It was the latter who was at the forefront of the “big four” early tracking West End Girl (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), but she was in trouble approaching the two-furlong pole after Jason Watson had already applied a reminder to the favourite in behind.

With Ryan Moore still going strong on the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Love, James Doyle was forced to commit early on Powerful Breeze and she responded with potent acceleration heading down into the “dip” to appear to settle the result. Quadrilateral had felt the whip again in the meantime, but it was when she met the climb to the line that she began to really engage against the far rail and the closing surge which had impressed all at Newbury came into play. Collaring Hugo Palmer’s stable star inside the last 50 yards, she had real momentum heading to the line and her unbeaten sequence was left intact.

Trainer Roger Charlton said, “I don’t know if it was two out or even three out that I thought, ‘we’re not running well here. We’re coming off the bridle and it’s not going to happen’, but she kept responding and I thought she did really well to get there. I guess the gap was diminishing up the rail a bit, but she fought like a good one and handled the track. It was a great effort, really, as it was a proper race today.”

Reflecting on how far the winner had come in a short space of time, he added, “We don’t gallop the two-year-olds that hard, so when she won first time out she needed the race and class won it for her. She then took us a bit by surprise when she won so easily last time. We didn’t learn that much and we hadn’t done much work since, but today was a proper test. The easier option was to go for the Oh So Sharp Stakes. It is not often you get good fillies come along and I thought, ‘hopefully she can win that and keep the dream open for May’, rather than taking on the best but the management encouraged me to run her in this race and result was good.”

A return for the fillies’ mile Classic in May is first and foremost now. “I guess we’ll come back for the Guineas–I see no reason not to come back. I guess we would probably come straight here without a prep run. She looks like she might stay further, as she didn’t look like a short runner there today. I’ve not won a Guineas or a group one with a two-year-old until now, so she would be the best filly I’ve had.”

Hugo Palmer said of Powerful Breeze, “She has lost precious little in defeat. I think with any May Hill winner that runs in the Fillies’ Mile, you are already thinking of her as a Guineas prospect. She galloped here three weeks ago and handled the track well and she certainly handled it better than the winner. She ran great. I think she was in front for a very long time, but I don’t think she was in front too soon. You have to play the hand you are dealt. Quadrilateral was going nowhere in the dip. Hopefully she learnt to hate Newmarket and will never come again, rather than practice makes perfect!”

Quadrilateral’s dam Nimble Thimble (Mizzen Mast), who also raced for this yard and won a maiden over an extended nine furlongs at Wolverhampton, is already responsible for the 3-year-old colt Boardman (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who was third in this year’s Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick. She is a half-sister to the aforementioned G3 Coventry S. and GII Del Mar Breeders’ Cup-winning sire Three Valleys and to the dam of the Australian stakes-winning sons of Redoute’s Choice (Aus) in Scissor Kick (Aus) and Sharkbite (Aus).

The third dam is Kerali (GB) (High Line {GB}), dam of Juddmonte’s famed Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) whose list of high-class progeny need no re-telling. Frankel has sired three smart types from her daughters, with the GI Beverly D. S. and GI Matriarch S. heroine Heat Haze (GB) (Green Desert) contributing the G3 Glorious S. scorer Mirage Dancer (GB) and the unraced Very Good News (Empire Maker) and Responsible (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) throwing last year’s G1 Irish St Leger third Weekender (GB) and this year’s G2 Prix de Sandringham scorer and G1 Prix Rothschild third Obligate (GB) respectively.

Skiable’s listed-winning half-sister Arrive (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) was responsible for another two of the operation’s classier fillies in the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) and Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who took the G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. and was placed in the G1 Sun Chariot S., GI Gamely S., GI Yellow Ribbon S., GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and GI Matriarch S. This is also the family of the G2 Prix de Malleret and GII Sheepshead Bay S. winner Treat Gently (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Nimble Thimble’s yearling filly is a full-sister to Quadrilateral (GB), while she also has a colt foal by Kingman (GB).

Superb Goffs November Catalogue Offers Real Quality in a Customer Friendly Format
Goffs has confirmed the highlights, dates and times for the 2019 Goffs November Sale featuring a superb selection of quality Foals and Breeding Stock.
The Dubawi own-brother to Ghaiyyath out of Classic winner Nightime (pictured) announced earlier this week heads up a world class selection of 771 foals catalogued for Part 1 of the Goffs November Foal Sale 2019. Part 1 will take place from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 November and is graded by day, building to a climax with the highest tier foals on Wednesday. The sire profile features such names as Dark Angel, Dubawi, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Lope De Vega, Sea The Stars and Siyouni amongst a host of other established and first crop sires throughout a catalogue that will hold huge international appeal for end-users and pinhookers.

211 foals will be offered in Part 2, which will take place on Friday 22 November from approximately 1pm. They will immediately follow the November Breeding Stock Sale which will see 265 mares from many of Ireland’s leading nurseries offered in the premier breeding stock session on Thursday 21 November, followed by 110 Day 2 mares on Friday morning.

Ahead of the publication of the November catalogues, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:

“We look forward to publishing the November Foal Sale catalogue on Monday and are confident that end-users and pinhookers alike will be excited by the depth of quality on offer as breeders have sent us a superb selection of some of the best foals that will be offered this year.

As in the past two years, the format for the November Sale allows buyers additional time to view the Part 1 foals. Our tightening up of the mares and Part 2 foals is, we believe, also the most customer friendly option for those vendors, as well as being more convenient for buyers who do not need to wait until Saturday for the foals.

Following the second day of mares in 2018, we have reacted to client feedback by restricting numbers slightly to create one convenient joint session with the Part 2 foals which saw keen competition from a large group of pinhookers at last year’s sale”.

The catalogue for the November Foal Sale will be available online from Monday 14 October. The printed catalogue will be available from 21 October and will contain all Part 1 and Part 2 foals. The November Breeding Stock Sale catalogue will be available online from 17 October and printed copies from the 23 October.

Goffs November Sale 2019:

  • November Foal Sale Part 1: Monday 18 – Wednesday 20 November, 10am each day
  • November Breeding Stock: Thursday 21 – Friday 22 November, 10am each day
  • November Foal Sale Part 2: Friday 22 November, from 1pm approx.

KOREA - Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 12)

by gyongmaman

Saturday racing is at Seoul with 12 races from 10:45 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Antonio

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Weak juvenile maiden, but something has got to win. That should be (6) P.K. HILL, who with a 2nd and two 5ths to her name so far has better form than anything else here and she has run faster times too. She should be on pace early and will take some beating. (10) BODY STAR ran 5th of 11 on debut back in June and while he struggled on his return in August, it was over 1300M and he weakened late on. Back at the minimum distance today, he can be close. (1) ROCK LINE didn’t go great on debut but should have come on for it, similarly (5) CHEON CHONG.

Selections (6) P.K. Hill (10) Body Star (1) Rock Line (5) Cheon Chong
Next Best 8, 7
Fast Start 1, 6, 9, 10

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juveniles here with four of them racing for the first time. Of those, (5) NEW MOON WARRIOR won his trial in a fast time and while he was assisted by a muddy track, if he brings that form to the races, he has every chance of going very well first-up today. The other contenders all have experience. (4) POWER TOWER ran 4th on debut on September 1st and should have come on for it while (2) DAHAENGIDA was a little slow to get going on his first start at the end of August but ran on well for 6th and can improve today. (7) BLUE K and (10) BLUE KING are others to take into account.

Selections (5) New Moon Warrior (4) Power Tower (2) Dahaengida (7) Blue K
Next Best 10, 6
Fast Start 3, 4, 5, 10

Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

More juvenile maidens and (2) BEST TAP ran a good 3rd on debut on September 8th, coming from well off the pace over 1000M. The step up in trip today should give him more to work with and he’s the one to beat here. (11) WILD KINGDOM was a disappointing 9th behind Best Tap in that race but previously ran 3rd over 1200M and should also go better back up in trip today. (8) DYNAMIC PUNCH was a little one-paced when 6th on debut but should come on today while (7) MACH NEDAN and first-time starter (12) LUXURY CAPTAIN are others who should be in the hunt.

Selections (2) Best Tap (8) Dynamic Punch (11) Wild Kingdom (12) Luxury Captain
Next Best 7, 10
Fast Start 6, 8, 11

Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Weak maiden here and the step up in trip could well be what (11) GOLD FIELD needs in order to make the breakthrough. She has some reasonable showings to her name at 1000M and in this company ought to be able to make it to the lead early. (1) KINGLY has also hinted at ability across ten starts so far and should go close here while (12) HYEONGMA PUBU has similarly managed to continually get beaten despite at times looking to have potential. Those three are likely to be the favourites with (2) NEOSEONG BYOKRYOK and (10) BEF K others with potential to improve.

Selections (11) Gold Field (1) Kingly (12) Hyeongma Pubu (2) Neoseong Byokryok
Next Best 10, 3
Fast Start 4, 8, 11

Race 5: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

(11) ANY SEON beat four of these on her way to a close 2nd place finish on a wet track at this distance on September 8th. It was her first try at 1700M and she seemed to thrive at it and she’ll be the one to beat today. (3) MACH SEUNGCHEON improved when tried at this distance for the first time last start and can build on that today. (5) SUPER VICTOR struggled in her latest two, both at 1300M, but has gone well at this trip in the past and should be in the placing frame here. (9) DAE YONGWANG steps up to two-turns for the first time and looks to be best of the rest.

Selections (11) Any Seon (3) Mach Seungcheon (5) Super Victor (9) Dae Yongwang
Next Best 8, 7
Fast Start 3, 5, 9, 11

Race 6: Class 4 (1000M0 Allowance / KRW 75 Million

A maiden for imported juveniles with six of the ten racing for the very first time. And one of those first-timers is set to be hot favourite. (4) CUPID MISSION made all in is trial… Read more of this post
