Sunday’s G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp was decided in the stewards’ room after the Irish duo Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) fought out a frantic finale. Joining battle inside the last 300 metres, it was the Ballydoyle raider who prevailed by a nose, with a length back to Line of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third. However, the June 18 G1 St James’s Palace S. winner had drifted left and interfered with the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois hero. In a decision far removed from past precedent where the French authorities are concerned, Circus Maximus was allowed to keep the race at 4-1.

Owner Robert Ng will contest the result of the Group 1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp after Romanised finished a nose behind Circus Maximus.

The winner drifted left and made contact with Romanised on the run to the line. But after a stewards’ inquiry the placings remained unaltered.

“Mr Ng has reviewed the head on of the video in Hong Kong,” said trainer Ken Condon. “He’s spoken to myself and to Rupert [Pritchard-Gordon, racing manager] and they’re going to lodge an appeal, based on visual evidence and what he’s seen.

“He’s in Hong Kong but he’s taken time to view it. He’s a great sportsman but thinks it’s a pretty cut and dried case. To be fair to the horse and to his record and career, that’s what’s going to happen.”

Circus Maximus eyeballed his older rival in the home straight under Ryan Moore and just prevailed, recording a second top-level success for trainer Aidan O’Brien, with Line Of Duty finishing third.

“He was the best horse on the day and was always holding the second with a bit more in the tank,” said Moore.

“He beat five Group 1 winners and it’s clear his best form is at a mile. We had a nice slot and he battled on well.”

Circus Maximus was cut from 6-1 (from 8) by Paddy Power for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October.

Phoenix Of Spain rallied to finish fifth behind 2018 Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Olmedo, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget.
