KOREA : Manuel Porcu Opens Korean Account With Weekend Double

by gyongmaman

While most of the attention this past weekend was focused on the opening leg of the 2019 Triple Crown at Busan, up at Seoul it proved to be an excellent couple of days for Manuel Porcu, as the track’s newest overseas jockey notched his first wins in Korea.

Porcu, who is from Italy, made his Seoul debuton March 30th but drew a blank on his first weekend with his best finish being a 4th. Returning last Saturday with a more promsing book of rides, it didn’t take long for him to make his breakthrough, the 25-year-old scoring on race 2 on Winner Say for trainer Luigi Riccardi and owner Katsumi Yoshida. Porcu guided the filly, who began as favourite,  to her maiden victory by almost three lengths.

Sunday saw a repeat for Porcu, as he took race 3 on 7/1 chance Royal Shalom. He would then conclude his weekend’s work with a close 2nd place on 50/1 outsaide Bright Cat in the class 1 feature.

Porcu, who can ride at 51kg, joins five other foreign jockeys in the weighing room at Seoul. They are French pair Johan Victoire and David Breux, Antonio Da Silva of Brazil, the UK’s Alan Munro and Japan’s Masa Tanaka.

LADY AURELIA SISTER LIKELY FOR ASCOT

Like her older half-sister Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) three years ago, Stonestreet homebred Lady Pauline (Munnings) could hardly have been more impressive on debut at Keeneland last weekend, receiving the >TDN Rising Star= badge with a debut victory. The chestnut could very well be part of trainer Wesley Ward=s 2019 Royal Ascot team, aiming to win the G2 Queen Mary S. like her sister, and WardBwho won his first two races at the Royal meeting 10 years agoBsaid Lady Pauline could even go to Britain early to take in Royal Ascot trials day…

Goffs Alter Autumn Sales Programme for Yearlings in UK and Ireland

Goffs have announced changes to their later yearling sales programme following feedback last year.

The first change is to the Goffs UK sale calendar with the existing Doncaster September Sale expanding to accommodate a new yearling session and be rebranded as the September HIT & Yearling Sale.

The new format will offer a day dedicated to yearlings on Tuesday 17thSeptember followed by a day of horses-in-training on Wednesday 18thSeptember. The change will mean the Doncaster Autumn Sale, held in late October, will no longer hold its traditional yearling session so avoiding a category clash with the Arqana October Yearling Sale and allowing it to focus purely on horses-in-training and pointers in a one day session on Thursday 24thOctober.

Meanwhile the Goffs Autumn Yearling & HIT Sale will return to its traditional slot in October with a two day sale on Monday and Tuesday, 21st and 22nd October (as opposed to 5th & 6th November) which avoids the clash with the lead in to Breeders’ Cup and the November sales in Kentucky which proved an issue for several clients last year.

Commenting on the changes, Goffs Group Chief Executive, Henry Beeby said:

“Feedback from vendors and purchasers alike last year prompted a review of our Autumn dates on both sides of the Irish Sea. We are committed to providing attractive, low cost outlets for yearling vendors at the commercial end of the market whilst the Goffs HIT Sale definitely suffered last year with its proximity to events in USA. At the same time the Doncaster September HIT Sale is already well supported with major consignments so the addition of a yearling session will ensure exposure for those yearlings to the sale’s existing buyers”.
