Acclamation’s Aclaim Gets Up In the Foret

Aclaim | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Smart over six furlongs at the start of last term, Aclaim moved up in trip for the first time in a mile handicap at Ascot in early September and duly collected before dropping down to this distance to win Newbury’s Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup two weeks later. Upping his game to annexe the G2 Challenge S. again over this trip at Newmarket in October, the bay began his current campaign with a sixth in the G1 Lockinge S. returning to a mile at Newbury May 20 before finishing eighth in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. tackling six furlongs at Royal Ascot June 24. Denied a clear run in that feature sprint, he was unlucky-in-running once more when under two-lengths sixth in the G2 Lennox S. back at this distance at Glorious Goodwood at the start of August. Second to Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over 6 1/2 furlongs at Deauville Aug. 6, he took the G2 Park S. over this trip and had the class edge here to bring up a first group 1 success for the Martyn Meade stable.

Always travelling strongly on the tail of the leader Karar against the rail, Aclaim was needing an out as the furlong marker approached but when angled around the long-time leader by Oisin Murphy overhauled that rival and compatriot So Beloved with just over 100 metres remaining en route to a decisive score. “He had run such a good race in the Maurice de Gheest and on that occasion needed 100 yards further and that is exactly what he got today,” Meade said. “He’s a tough little horse. He tries so hard that he reduces me to tears. He comes to his best form at this time of year. The conditions were ideal today and he had had the ideal preparation. Winning a group one was something we had to do this year and now we’ve done it. My immediate reaction is not to run him again this year. He’s won a group one and it’s job done. I’m not sure if he stays in training next year.”

Aclaim’s dam Aris was third in the Listed Flame of Tara S. over a mile and is a half-sister to the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), herself the dam of the recent G2 Beresford S. runner-up and G3 Golden Fleece S. third Delano Roosevelt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The second dam Cumbres also produced the G3 Give Thanks S. third Arkadina (Ire) (Danehill) and is out of Floripedes who captured the G3 Prix de Lutece and was runner-up in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak. She of course is the dam of the great Montjeu (Ire) who established his claim to immortality in the feature race on this card in 1999. Also from the family of last year’s G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James’s Palace S. hero Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) and Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who took the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye also at this meeting two years ago, Aris also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old colt by Dawn Approach (Ire) named Accept (Ire) and a yearling filly by Slade Power (Ire).

Dark Angel’s Battaash Storms to Abbaye Triumph

Battaash | Scoop Dyga

By Sean Cronin

Strolling through wins in the Listed Scurry S., G3 Coral Charge and G2 King George S., Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) gained revenge on his Aug. 25 G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. conqueress Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) with a stunning performance in Sunday’s G1 Prix de l’Abbaye at Chantilly. Sharply away to race on the lead from the outset, the 33-10 second favourite was stoked up with all rivals in trouble approaching the final eighth and kept on powerfully in the closing stages to easily account for last year’s winner Marsha by four lengths, with Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) a neck adrift in third. “He ran moderately at York last time because he boiled over before the race and didn’t give his true showing,” explained trainer Charlie Hills. “He’d also had four races in six weeks before that, which may have taken something out of him. He was a much fresher horse today and it was a pleasure to see him do it so easily from the front. I’ve never seen anything with as much speed on the gallops at home and think he is just phenomenal. Hopefully, being a gelding, he’ll be around for a while yet, but he’s now through for the season. I’m looking forward to having him around and everything is open next year, including the Breeders’ Cup.”
Reigning champion Marsha put up a bold fight to retain her tiara, but was unable to cope with Battaash’s turbo-charged effort, and is now set to go under the hammer at Park Paddocks. “Marsha has run consistently well all year and we’ll do well to get another one as good as her,” reflected trainer Sir Mark Prescott’s assistant William Butler. “The next date in her diary is the [Tattersalls] December Sales and that’s likely to be where she’s heading.”
The ultra-consistent Battaash, kin to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Littlelordconford (Ire) (Intikhab) and a filly foal by Gutaifan (Ire), is the first foal bred from Anna Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), herself a half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G2 Champagne S. victor Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk). Anna Law is also a half-sister to Bird Key (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who in turn produced this year’s G2 Duke of York S. hero and G1 Diamond Jubilee runner-up Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Battaash’s third dam Noirmant (Ire) (Dominion {GB}) is a half-sister to G1 Prix Royal-Oak victor Braashee (Sadler’s Wells), four-time Group 3 winner Adam Smith (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and G3 Nell Gwyn S. victress Ghariba (Ire) (Final Straw {GB}). The latter, in turn, is the dam of Listed Silver Spoon S. heroine Promptly (Ire) (Lead On Time), herself the dam of the G3 Autumn S. scorer and G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Fantastic View (Distant View).

Galileo’s Rhododendron Battles to Opera Success

5th at CHY, Gr. Stk, 400000 G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines (10f) Winner: Rhododendron (Ire), f, 3 by Galileo (Ire)

Rhododendron | Scoop Dyga

By Sean Cronin

Susan Magnier colourbearer Rhododendron (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) was no match for Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) nor Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) when runner-up in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks, respectively, and bounced back off a seventh in Leopardstown’s G1 Matron S. last month to claim Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix de l’Opera, a “Win And You’re In” for the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar in November, in game fashion. Positioned in touch racing fifth after the initial exchanges as The Black Princess (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}) clocked the fractions under Arc-winning jockey Frankie Dettori, last term’s G1 Moyglare Stud S. third and G1 Fillies’ Mile heroine was asked to stretch approaching the final quarter-mile and kept on resolutely under a late drive once hooking up with Hydrangea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) with 300 metres remaining to deny that stablemate by a head. Lady Frankel (GB) (Frankel {GB}) closed strongly to finish a neck further back in third. “I’ve just spoken to [part-owner] Michael [Tabor] about sending her to America for the [GI Breeders’ Cup] Filly & Mare Turf and I think that will be the plan,” revealed trainer Aidan O’Brien. “She had a bad day the last time she came here [when found to have bled after pulling up in June’s G1 Prix de Diane], which stopped her for six weeks and the lads did a great job to get her back. She’s all class and we thought she would win the Oaks only for her to run into Enable at Epsom. I’m delighted with Hydrangea and there’s a good chance that she could also go for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare.”
Rhododendron is one of three Group winners for G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Nassau S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). All her progeny so far are by Galileo (Ire), including this season’s G2 Debutante S. victress and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac fourth Magical (Ire), G3 International S. scorer Flying the Flag (Ire) and a filly foal. Halfway To Heaven is the best of three stakes winners for G2 King’s Stand S. heroine and G1 July Cup runner-up Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), whose other daughter Theann (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) landed the G3 Summer S. and produced GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. victress Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Cassandra Go is a half-sister to the G3 Coventry S. victor and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up Verglas (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}).

Nathaniel’s Enable Routs Arc Rivals

Enable | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Becoming the first English-trained 3-year-old filly in history to win the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Khalid Abdullah’s Enable (GB)(Nathaniel {Ire}) treated Sunday’s renewal at Chantilly with as much disdain as she had her four previous group 1 contests to lift Frankie Dettori to a record fifth success in European racing’s crown jewel. Tanking along behind Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) throughout, the 4-5 favourite took over with a quarter mile to race and opened up in her now-familiar dramatic fashion. At the line, she had secured her greatest win by 2 1/2 lengths from Godolphin’s Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who rushed past his relative Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) late and put 1 1/4 lengths between them. “She is very special,” Dettori said after seizing the outright record on his 29th ride in the Arc. “She’s a superstar–an absolute freak and she won like I expected. She is uncomplicated with a big heart and I said last week to John Gosden that she was the best she had ever been. I had position A in the race and knew she had no weight, so I kicked and took four lengths and the race was over. C’est magnifique.”

Using her defeat of Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the May 10 Listed Cheshire Oaks as a springboard to immortality, Enable seemed to grow an extra metre in terms of ability during the rest of that month and destroyed Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})–who won Sunday’s G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines later on the card–in the June 2 G1 Epsom Oaks against the fitting backdrop of an electric storm. Her scintillating follow-up in the Irish equivalent at a sun-baked Curragh July 15 was a notable achievement in its own right, but also served to put her spot-on for the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. which was staged in vastly contrasting conditions a fortnight later. Her 4 1/2-length dismissal of Ulysses in that rain-blighted Ascot feature marked her as one of the greats of her sex in modern times with remarkable versatility another trademark to add to her already impressive range of attributes. Allowed to domineer the Aug. 24 G1 Yorkshire Oaks from the front, the homebred sauntered into the Arc unperturbed by the sequence of tests she had had to endure since her seasonal bow when disguising herself as workmanlike in third behind stablemate Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in a Newbury conditions event Apr. 21.

Breaking alertly in customary style, she was just behind Idaho with Ulysses and Order of St George close up going to the first turn before Dettori took a slight pull to allow the latter past just under a minute into the race. Once Donnacha O’Brien was slotted into second behind Seamie Heffernan, the Ballydoyle machine was in motion once again but there was always a feeling that the talented duo in front were merely acting as pacemakers for the Juddmonte wunderkind. Such was her enthusiasm passing the famous chateau, the result already seemed set there as she bowled along in the slipstream of Idaho and Order of St George with the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Brametot (Ire)(Rajsaman {Fr}) for company. Two out, the first three home were in line with Enable tracked by Ulysses and Cloth of Stars’s jockey Mickael Barzalona following the Niarchos homebred closely. No sooner had Enable been given the green light by Dettori, she was gone beyond recall and it was the Godolphin-Fabre representative who gave the most meaningful chase to deny the winner her usual wide-margin success.

Her trainer was hailing the jockey afterwards. “She has amazing ability and it was a very clever ride from Frankie,” Gosden said. “He went forward and then when he saw the horse [Order of St George] on his outside he managed to manoeuvre around and that was exceptionally important as it meant he had a clear run. That one manoeuvre offered her every opportunity to win the race. She had shown us she was in the zone and she still had her summer coat. We don’t ask anything of her at home and she enjoys her work.” Of the tantalising possibility of Enable staying in training as a 4-year-old, he added, “She has only really had one season of racing and so there is every reason to keep her in training, particularly with Longchamp re-opening and that would be great to win this on two different tracks.”

Juddmonte’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said, “She’s a champion filly and this is such a great result for the Juddmonte team. She is the fourth generation bred by Prince Khalid from one of his first horses bred and it is a tribute to him. We are all very proud of what she has achieved and it is a fifth Arc winner for Prince Khalid, which speaks volumes. With Frankie becoming the all-time leading jockey, it is fantastic. All conditions were favourable and she showed her class to the world. Her future has yet to be discussed and it will be decided in time whether she stays in training.”

Cloth of Stars was putting in a career-best, but had entered the race with confidence behind him from the incomparable Andre Fabre. Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard commented, “Cloth of Stars has run an incredible race and we are very proud of him. He really finished well and has shown himself to be a world-class horse, beaten by a proud champion. The Arc has been his objective for a long time and he was ready to run the race of his life. We have not talked about any further plans yet, but will do so when we see how he comes out of this race.”

Sir Michael Stoute confirmed that the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf is still on for Ulysses. “He’s run his race and there are no excuses regarding the ground as it rode well,” he said. “I don’t think he’s had too hard a race and, if that’s the case, we will take him to the Breeders’ Cup Turf again.” His jockey Jim Crowley added, “I had a lovely position throughout, tracking Enable. He picked up well for me when I asked him in the straight, but the winner must be an exceptional filly.”

Aidan O’Brien said of his fourth Order of St George, eighth Idaho and ninth Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), “That was probably far enough for Winter and we might go back to a mile and a quarter for the race at Ascot [the Oct. 21 G1 Qipco Champion S.]. Seventh Heaven [in 14th] is getting better and Idaho was probably lit up a bit. Order of St George ran very well and we might look at the two-mile race [the G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup] at Ascot.”

Enable has placed her sire where he could never be on the track, marginally ahead of Frankel (GB) in terms of producing an outstanding performer from his first crop. She is one of two black-type performers alongside the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France-placed Contribution for Concentric, who was herself the winner of the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte and runner-up in the G3 Prix de Flore. Her dam is the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Apogee, who is also the dam of Concentric’s G2 Prix de Royallieu-winning full-sister Dance Routine (GB). She in turn produced the multiple top-level scorer and champion grass horse in the US Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who was runner-up twice in this race and so Enable was settling a family score. Apogee also produced the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon and G3 Prix de Chemin de Fer du Nord-winning sire Apsis (GB), while the third dam Bourbon Girl was runner-up in both the G1 English and Irish Oaks which Enable had earlier put right. Her best runner was the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly winner and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up Daring Miss (GB) (Sadler’s Wells). This success came hot on the heels of another family victory of lesser stature, but nonetheless significant in its own right as the Chad Brown-trained Projected (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), a son of Flintshire’s half-sister Deliberate (GB) (King’s Best), won Saturday’s GII Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup S. at Laurel Park. Concentric also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old colt by Dansili (GB) named Centroid (GB), a yearling filly by the same sire and a 2017 filly by Frankel.

Galileo’s Happily Wins the Lagardere

2nd at CHY, Gr. Stk, €350,000 G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) (8f) Winner: Happily (Ire), f, 2 by Galileo (Ire)

Happily | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

All of Aidan O’Brien’s previous seven winners of this contest had been colts, but there is a sea-change in the way the famed operation is campaigning its fillies of late and Happily was able to overwhelm two TDN Rising Stars of the opposite sex and bring up a 21st group 1 for Ballydoyle in 2017 with this “Win And You’re In” for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar in early November. Seventh to stablemate and TDN Rising Star September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) over seven furlongs at Leopardstown June 8, the bay had stayed at that trip subsequently and followed a maiden success at The Curragh June 30 with an impressive score in the G3 Silver Flash S. back at Leopardstown July 27. Second to Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Debutante S. at The Curragh Aug. 20, she came forward from that run to reverse the placings in the final yards of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. at the same track Sept. 10.

Forced into rearguard action early as Mythical Magic (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) sought to lead Masar at a generous tempo throughout the early stages, Happily never looked entirely at home on the soft ground and when TDN Rising Star Olmedo loomed between the Godolphin pair in early straight it looked as if she could be chasing a place at best. Ryan Moore knew what he had underneath, however, and as Olmedo battled with fellow TDN Rising Star Masar up ahead she was delivered to grind them down with 100 metres remaining and avenge the disqualification of her full-brother Gleneagles (Ire) in this three years ago. “She was already a group one winner over seven furlongs, so we were confident she would get the trip well,” Moore said. “We started racing a long way from home and she showed a great will to win. For a filly to beat the colts is a good thing for the future.”

Aidan O’Brien could send Happily to Del Mar now and said, “It was the lads who decided to run her against the colts, so it was a brave call. She’s a tough, hardy filly and is a sister to Gleneagles. The fillies’s allowance wasn’t a disadvantage and she won well on the line. She showed she got the mile well so we think the [Juvenile] Fillies’ race [at the Breeders’ Cup] could suit her.”

Jean-Claude Rouget was taking encouragement from the performance of the runner-up and said, “He showed there that he is a very nice horse, but he is still a little bit tender and was forced to come a bit too soon which didn’t help. He ran on very nicely at the end and we’ll put him away for the season now and get him ready for the Classics as we did with Almanzor and Brametot.” Charlie Appleby said of the third-place finisher, “I think Masar will be a better horse on better ground. He’s got bags of ability, but that will be it for this year. James [Doyle] said he didn’t take the bend very well.”

Happily’s second group 1 success adds further lustre to the record of her G2 Cherry Hinton-winning dam You’resothrilling, whose five runners from as many foals of racing age all by Galileo are all black-type performers. Chief among them is the G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 St James’s Palace S. hero Gleneagles (Ire), while the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Marvellous (Ire) is no poor relation along with the G3 C L Weld Park S. winner Coolmore (Ire) and this year’s GI Secretariat S. runner-up Taj Mahal (Ire). You’resothrilling is a full-sister to the gallant and brilliant six-times group 1-winning champion and leading sire Giant’s Causeway, with their respective dam being Mariah’s Storm, herself the winner of six graded-stakes races and also the second dam of this year’s G1 Irish Champion S. scorer Decorated Knight (GB) also by Galileo. She also has a 2017 colt by the same sire.

Marcel Boussac Glory For Dubawi’s Wild Illusion

1st at CHY, Gr. Stk, €300,000 G1 Total Prix Marcel Boussac – Criterium des Pouliches (8f) Winner: Wild Illusion (GB), f, 2 by Dubawi (Ire)

Wild Illusion | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Earning TDN Rising Star status on debut when winning over this trip at Yarmouth Aug. 22, Wild Illusion gained invaluable education when third in the G3 Prix d’Aumale over this course and distance Sept. 3 and had shown sufficient progression at home to warrant a supplementary fee for this contest, a Breeders’ Cup qualifier for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar in November. Sent into a prominent spot from the outset by James Doyle, the bay overtook Ballydoyle’s Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to sit behind the d’Aumale winner Soustraction (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) before being committed in early straight. Quickly asserting, the powerful homebred whose pedigree possesses stamina in abundance was not for catching as she emulated the same stable’s 2016 winner Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Charlie Appleby is thinking more of an Oaks campaign next term. “She is a very relaxed filly and we put the cheekpieces on to keep the concentration, but she’s as genuine as the day is long and a lovely filly with a great pedigree,” he said. “That’s her done and she will be put her away for next year now. I’m sure the Guineas will be considered, but she’s a relentless galloper and on the back of that staying is going to be her game. I have to thank Sheikh Mohammed for letting us supplement her.” Polydream’s trainer Freddy Head was a touch disappointed and said, “My filly didn’t show the same sparkle as at Deauville and maybe it is because it is the end of the season. She was in good form in August, but it is different in October and also this was a mile and that was seven. She did finish like a filly that will stay further and is through for the season.”

Wild Illusion’s dam Rumh was a smart middle-distance performer and stayer for this operation, winning the Listed Ballymacoll Stud Lord Weinstock Memorial S. by six lengths in 2011. Her first foal was last year’s Listed Montrose S. winner Really Special (GB) (Shamardal), who was also third in the Listed Meydan Classic. The second dam is the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin heroine Royal Dubai, herself a half-sister to the top-class Royal Highness (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). She captured the G2 Prix de Malleret and was second in the G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix Ganay before winning the GI Beverly D S. and later produced the G2 Prix Hocquart and G2 Prix Dollar-winning sire Free Port Lux (GB). The fourth dam Gesedeh (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}) took the G3 Prix de Flore and counts the G1 Dubai World Cup hero Electrocutionist (Red Ransom) and G1 Deutsches Derby hero Robertico (GB) (Robellino) among her descendants. Gesedeh is a half-sister to the dual Ascot Gold Cup scorer and champion stayer Ardross (Ire). Rumh also has a yearling filly by Oasis Dream (GB) and a 2017 full-brother to Wild Illusion.
