Elarqam | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

It takes more than a significant price tag and a knockout pedigree to earn TDN Rising Star status and it was a combination of what his family attributes suggest and the manner of his winning performance on York’s Knavesmire Sept. 10 that earned Elarqam the tag. Arriving on the Rowley Mile on which both his sire and dam Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}) became household names in their respective Guineas, Shadwell’s 1.6million guineas Tattersalls October graduate was taking a path that many of his ilk had trodden previously with many bubbles burst in this type of Classic staging post. What both Frankel and Attraction had in common was their willingness to run through brick walls and with that in mind Jim Crowley set about ploughing his own furrow towards the centre of the track throughout the early stages.
At York, Dane O’Neill had gradually worked on the bay who bears a resemblance to his powerful-galloping dam and he had come through to take command later in the piece. With that valuable educative process under his belt, Elarqam was ready to show more of his latent aggression this time and with pattern-race success at stake the operation’s number one jockey was keen not to disappoint. Always at the fore of the action away from the main group, he took the race by the scruff of the neck after halfway and readily asserted from the rail-running Tangled from over a furlong out as the Listed Flying Scotsman S. winner Tip Two Win emerged to give the form credence.
Speaking candidly afterwards, Mark Johnston was unequivocal in the sense of expectation he had been feeling beforehand. “It was the most nervous I have been for years, maybe since his mother ran,” he explained. “It’s not the size of the race, it’s when nothing but first will do. Coming second today would have been a desperate disappointment.” The Kingsley House trainer is still getting to grips with what is one of his yard’s most important projects since he began his career. “He is quite a difficult horse to read, as he is laid-back. If anything he is too laid-back most of the time at home. You can’t see when he is going to find another gear. He has not made the normal progression through his gallops. He did one spectacular gallop early on then next time it was as if he was having his first gallop. That is why we have been a little bit nervous to take big jumps with him. Jim said he got quite warm before the race and that he was quite keen in the race. He was glad to be away from the others. Clearly he is still a very green horse despite the fact we have taken so long in the season to run him. We really haven’t discussed where we are going after today.”
Odds of 20-1 were the biggest available immediately afterwards for Elarqam emulating his parents back here next May and with the 2000 Guineas writ large in his genetic destiny it could be that they prove generous come the big day. His dam, who was far from conventional in her conformation, was nevertheless the first in history to complete the treble of G1 English and Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. in 2004. In some ways a freak of nature, the former Mark Johnston celebrity had the speed and precocity to win the five-furlong G3 Queen Mary S. and G2 Cherry Hinton S. as a juvenile and the longevity to capture the 2005 G1 Matron S. Her daughter Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was runner-up in the GIII My Charmer H. and GIII Violet S., while she was also responsible for Ballydoyle’s G3 Sapphire S.-winning sprinter Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). A half-sister to the GIII Hillsborough S. runner-up Federation (GB) (Motivator {GB}), Attraction also has a yearling colt by Dubawi (Ire) and a filly foal by Invincible Spirit (Ire) named Motion (GB).

GIOVEDÌ 28 SETTEMBRE 2017. +++ Breaking News: Verso l”#Arc, #QPAT: Aidan O’Brien da forfait con Highland Reel e Cliffs Of Moher. Ecco i 18!
