Galileo’s Magical Causes an Upset In the Debutante

Sunday, August 20, 2017

4th at CUR, Gr. Stk, €115,000 G2 Breast Cancer Research Debutante S. (7f) Winner: Magical (Ire), f, 2 by Galileo (Ire)

Magical | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

MAGICAL (IRE), f, 2, Galileo (Ire)–Halfway To Heaven (Ire), by Pivotal (GB).

O-Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor; B-Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Donnacha O’Brien. €67,850. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, €81,514.

As expected, there was an Aidan O’Brien one-two here but not with the duo many thought would prevail as Donnacha O’Brien steered Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to an all-the-way win at 11-1 from Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Twelve months on from her full-sister Rhododendron (Ire) taking this race, the bay daughter of Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) set an honest tempo and kept going as Happily tried hard to close. At the line, there was a 1 1/4-length margin between the stablemates, with Mary Tudor (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) who had been second to Magical at Cork last time Aug. 8 the same distance away in third. She was in turn 3/4 of a length in front of the 11-10 favourite and TDN Rising Star September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in fourth.

Another Group Winner For Havana Gold At The Curragh

Sunday, August 20, 2017

3rd at CUR, Gr. Stk, €60,000 Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Curragh S. (5f) Winner: Treasuring (GB), f, 2 by Havana Gold (Ire)

Treasuring | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

TREASURING (GB), f, 2, Havana Gold (Ire)–You Look So Good (GB), by Excellent Art (GB).

O-Qatar Racing Ltd; B-The Pocock Family (GB); T-Ger Lyons; J-Colin Keane. €35,400. Lifetime Record: 6-3-2-0, €62,960.

This race lost a significant player after Aidan O’Brien withdrew Declarationofpeace (War Front) and it was the filly Treasuring who proved toughest in the conditions to make all and build on her latest win in a five-furlong nursery at Tipperary Aug. 11. Kept company by the similarly tough Sirici (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) throughout, the 3-1 second favourite eventually saw her off to score by a half length from the strong-closing Goodthingstaketime (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), with the same margin back to the tiring Sirici in third.

Frankel’s Rostropovich Gets Up Late In the Futurity

Sunday, August 20, 2017

2nd at CUR, Gr. Stk, €130,000 G2 Galileo Irish EBF Futurity S. (7f) Winner: Rostropovich (Ire), c, 2 by Frankel (GB)

Rostropovich | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

ROSTROPOVICH (IRE), c, 2, Frankel {GB}–Tyranny {GB}, by Machiavellian). (1,100,000gns Ylg ’16 TATOCT).

O-Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Markus Jooste; B-Epona Bloodstock Ltd (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Ryan Moore. €76,700. Lifetime Record: 4-2-0-1, €88,414. *1/2 to Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), Hwt. 3yo-Ire at 7-9.5f, G1SW-Ire, G1SP-Eng & Fr, $523,650; Wilshire Boulevard (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), GSW-Ire & GSP-Eng, $173,305; and That’s Plenty (Ire) (Dr Fong), SP-US, $124,846.

The withdrawal of the likely hot favourite Theobald (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) robbed this renewal of some significance and it was already looking one of the weakest in recent memory, but the first home of an Aidan O’Brien one-two-three could yet be one of those big improvers his trainer is so famous for. Rostropovich hardly had ideal credentials for 11-8 favouritism, having finished last of three in a conditions event over this seven-furlong trip at Naas July 8, but he had Ryan Moore’s vote of confidence and that was enough for the betting public. Having to be kept up to his work a long way out in third, the bay who cost 1.1million gns at Tattersalls October took until the last stride to get to stablemate Coat of Arms (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) but his rider was not accepting defeat and he managed to carve out a short-head verdict, with fellow Ballydoyle runner Berkeley Square (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 1 3/4 lengths away in third. In doing so, he was providing his trainer with an 11th renewal as he moves closer to the record of 16 set by his predecessor Dr Vincent O’Brien.

O-Mrs Annette O’Callaghan; B-Countess De La Warr (GB); T-Ger Lyons; J-Colin Keane. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €10,780.

Gobi Desert was steadied to raced under cover behind the leaders in sixth after breaking alertly in this fascinating newcomers’ heat. Pushed along to close approaching the final quarter mile, the well-backed 3-1 favourite launched his challenge at the eighth pole and was ridden out in the closing stages to prevail by a half length from Threeandfourpence (War Front). Kin to a yearling filly by Frankel (GB) and a filly foal by Dansili (GB), he is the first winner produced by a half-sister to five black-type performers which include G1 Prix du Cadran-winning sire Reefscape (GB) (Linamix {Fr}) and MGSW sires Martaline (GB) (Linamix {Fr}) and Coastal Path (GB) (Halling). His second dam Coraline (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) is a half-sister to G1 Irish Oaks heroine Wemyss Bight (GB) (Dancing Brave), herself the dam of MGISW sire Beat Hollow (GB) (Sadler’s Wells).

Aste: #Arqana August Yearling Sale, partenza forte. Fatturato a €17 milioni (+24%) e 3 top price da Galileo. Eccoli..
