King George still producing world champions

By William Buick

I am looking forward to an exciting week ahead, with Ascot’s G1 King George meeting followed by five days of Glorious Goodwood. It is a brilliant time of the season, particularly when you have good rides in the big races.

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, to give the race its full title, is a mid-summer highlight of the British racing year. First run in 1951, long before I was born, it has always produced outstanding winners.

The Roll of Honour illustrates just how good it has been in celebrating proper world champions, with names such as Ribot, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Shergar and Dancing Brave featuring prominently.

I won the 2011 King George on the John Gosden-trained three-year-old Nathaniel and was also second on him the following year.

Godolphin’s Jack Hobbs, my mount in this year’s King George, has an excellent chance, especially as he is coming back to a mile and a half on rain-softened ground, two major factors in his favour.

But we will all have to produce our A-game to beat Enable, a dual-Oaks winner, who was impressive with wide-margin victories at Epsom and the Curragh.

As a matter of interest, she is a daughter from the first crop of Nathaniel, further enhancing her credentials for the King George.

Jack Hobbs, an Irish Derby winner, showed what he can do at his top when he comfortably defeated a good field in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night in March.

Next time out, it is fair to say he was uncomfortable on the ground when eighth to Highland Reel in the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

It was too fast for him and he never let himself down on that ground.

He has won five of his 11 races, and has been placed in another four. He will have conditions to suit this time, but he must give 14lb to Enable.

I am excited to be riding Ribchester again at Goodwood next week. He runs in the G1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday. He is top, top class.

It will be very busy, as we at Godolphin are also introducing some nice two-year-olds. As I said earlier in this column, it is an exciting time of the season, and I am hoping to make the most of it.

HAPPILY (IRE), f, 2, Galileo (Ire)–You’resothrilling (GSW-Eng & Ire, $219,415), by Storm Cat.

O-Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor; B-Orpendale & Chelston Ireland (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Ryan Moore. €35,400. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-0, €47,720.

Off the mark in a seven-furlong maiden at The Curragh last time June 30, Happily who is a full-sister to Gleneagles (Ire) and Marvellous (Ire) looked one for the 2018 Classics here as she outclassed some well-regarded contemporaries. Held up in third travelling enthusiastically for Ryan Moore, the 8-11 favourite was sent to the front approaching the furlong pole and when the whip was threatened surged clear to beat Shalailah (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) by five lengths, with Dawn Delivers (GB) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. “Donnacha loved her the first day and she jumped forward the next time and looks to have done so again,” Aidan O’Brien commented after greeting the very impressive 10th winner of this race. “We could look at the [G2] Debutante S. [at The Curragh Aug. 20] and the [G1] Moyglare [Stud S. at The Curragh Sept. 10] after that.”

DELANO ROOSEVELT (IRE) (c, 2, Galileo {Ire}–Again {Ire} {Hwt. 2yo Filly & MG1SW-Ire, $727,081}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the least-fancied of the Ballydoyle trio at 14-1, languished in rear early under Wayne Lordan. Cajoled into action in early straight, the son of the 2008 G1 Moyglare Stud S. and 2009 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Again reeled in his stablemate and 4-6 favourite Coat of Arms (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the final yards to score by a head. This was the maiden used to launch Camelot (GB) in 2011 and in which the yard’s Douglas Macarthur (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) earned TDN Rising Star status 12 months ago. “He was just ready to start and is a big horse and a big strider,” Aidan O’Brien commented. “Sometimes on their first start they are very green, so you’d have to be delighted with that and you’d imagine he’d have no problem with a mile and a quarter next year.” Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €10,780.

Tajaanus graduated on debut in a May 20 Rowley Mile course novice event at Newmarket and went postward for this coming off a sixth in the July 1 Listed Empress Fillies’ S. at Newmarket’s summer venue. Tracking the leaders along the inner in a share of fifth after the initial skirmishes, she was angled away from the fence soon after turning for home and kept on strongly under a final-furlong drive to earn a career high in a three-way photo.

Tajaanus, kin to a yearling colt by Intikhab, is the first foal produced by Rayaheen (GB) (Nayef), herself a winning half-sister to Raaqy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who hit the board in this contest two years ago, out of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Cheveley Park S.-winning European champion juvenile filly Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}). Ecco i 2 comunicati..
