Impressive Prix Jean Prat victory for Thunder Snow

Thunder Snow made all to win the G1 Prix Jean Prat much more comfortably than the length and a quarter verdict suggests at Chantilly, France, on Sunday, July 9.

The three-year-old son of Helmet went to the front from the start under regular rider Christophe Soumillon and was always going well in the mile race on good turf.

The Godolphin colt was asked to keep picking up the pace in the straight and stormed clear of his opponents inside the final furlong.

Thunder Snow was eased down close home to overcome his main rival, the previously unbeaten Trais Fluors, who came with a late flourish without threatening, in 1m 38.78s.

Saeed bin Suroor commented: “Thunder Snow has done very well today and won the race easily.

“He handled the going fine and the jockey gave him a good ride all the way.

“This was his second G1 victory in France (from two starts there) and he has also won two Classics in Dubai.

“We will keep the options open about his next target as he prefers some give in the ground. He could go back up in trip at York (for the G1 Juddmonte Stakes, August 23, 1m 2f) or we may keep him for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Ascot, October 21, 1m).”

Christophe Soumillon added: “The race went well. Thunder Snow was able to go ahead and relaxed in front. When I asked him to accelerate, he was very professional and had all the answers.”

Prix Jean Prat – Groupe I – 1600 mètres – Thunder Snow, beau, bon, polyvalent…

Helmet’s Thunder Snow Wins the Jean Prat

5th at CHY, Gr. Stk, €400,000 G1 Prix Jean Prat (8f) Winner: Thunder Snow (Ire), c, 3 by Helmet (Aus)

By Tom Frary

A day after fellow Godolphin representative Barney Roy (GB)) (Excelebration {Ire}) went so close in the Eclipse, Thunder Snow made all here to further boost the form of the G1 St James’s Palace S. in which he was third behind that class act at Royal Ascot June 20. Runner-up in the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood in July and the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in September, the bay was successful in the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in October before being geared towards a tilt at the Kentucky Derby. All went to plan in his warm-up races on the dirt in Dubai, but after straightforward displays when capturing the Feb. 11 G3 UAE 2000 Guineas and Mar. 25 G2 UAE Derby he went buckaroo exiting the stalls on the first Saturday in May.

Returning to Europe and resorting to a conventional racing style when second to Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh May 27, Thunder Snow was 1 1/4 lengths behind Barney Roy in first-time cheekpieces in the St James’s Palace and it was a surprise that he traded only second favourite in this select affair weakened further as the filly Lightupthenight (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) planted herself in the stalls and came out only when her chance had completely gone. Sent straight to the lead by Christophe Soumillon, he steadily drew away from Gold Luck from the quarter pole and was beyond recall as the market-leader Trais Fluors made his move.

Saeed bin Suroor was full of praise for the winner afterwards and said, “This horse seems to enjoy France–two starts and two wins in group 1 races–but really he’s a very genuine horse who never runs a bad race. He is best up to a mile and a quarter and is very relaxed now, even in the mornings and hasn’t stopped improving. There will be many more opportunities for him this season and maybe he could head straight to the [G1] Juddmonte International [at York Aug. 23] and then the [G1] Queen Elizabeth II [S. at Ascot Oct. 21]. We’ll see how he is, as he could also possibly come back to France for the [Aug. 13 G1] Prix Jacques le Marois [at Deauville Aug. 13].”

Thunder Snow is the fourth black-type winner from as many runners for Eastern Joy after the G2 May Hill S. and G3 UAE Oaks scorer and G1 1000 Guineas third Ihtimal, the G1 Sun Chariot S. runner-up and G1 Falmouth S. third Always Smile and G3 Oh So Sharp S. winner First Victory. The second dam Red Slippers won the Sun Chariot when it was staged as a group 2 before producing the G1 Prix de Diane heroine West Wind (GB) (Machiavellian). The third dam Morning Devotion was responsible for the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Balanchine (Storm Bird), the G2 Jockey Club S.-winning sire Romanov (Ire) who was also third in the G1 Epsom Derby and the listed-placed First Night (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) who in turn is the second dam of the G3 Prelude scorer and G1 Metropolitan H. third Havana Cooler (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). Also connected to the sires Thady Quill and Stage Call (Ire), Eastern Joy also has an as yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Shamardal named Winter Lightning (Ire) and a 2017 colt by Dubawi (Ire).

KOREA: I’m Your Father Wins Busan Mayor’s Cup For New Zealand Trainer David Miller

by gyongmaman

I’m Your Father pulled off a remarkable win in the Busan Mayor’s Cup on Sunday afternoon, defeating Dubai hero Triple Nine by half a length to give New Zealand trainer David Miller a huge victory in Busan’s biggest race.

Im Your Father Triple Nine

Grand Prix winner Clean Up Joy was sent off as favourite but despite overcoming gate 2 to get a good start, it was not to be his day. Returning with a swollen hind leg, he looked to have been feeling it for much of the race and had little to offer in the home straight, coming home in 9th place.

The early pace was set by last year’s winner Beolmaui Kkum with Success Story going along for the ride too. At one point beginning the long turn for home, the pair had put almost seven lengths into the field but with Beolmaui Kkum not at the level he once was, it was never likely to last. I’m Your Father and Triple Nine meanwhile sat patiently at the head of the chasing pack waiting for the leaders to come back to them.

They came back at the top of the straight. By this time it was clear that Clean Up Joy was labouring and wouldn’t be taking part in the business end of the race. Success Story lingered longer than Beolmaui Kkum but under Lee Hee Cheon, I’m Your Father struck the front just over a furlong out. Only Triple Nine, under the urging of Jo In Kwen, could go with him but he couldn’t quite get there. I’m Your Father maintained his pace to the line and jockey Lee had time to celebrate as they broke the wire with a half length in hand.

Saengil Gippeum, Jiljuui Sin and Ms. Margaux all closed deeply to finish 3rd to 5th while Diferent Dimension, like Triple Nine in his first start since returning from Dubai, put in a very creditable 6th. Clean Up Joy aside, Champ Line was perhaps the disappointment of the race. The 5-year-old entered having won his last five but had an off day. Mupae who was also relatively well-backed, reportedly took a knock coming out of the gate and struggled throughout.

For jockey Lee Hee Cheon, it was a 2nd group win following his victory on Never Seen Before in the 2014 Minister’s Cup. Lee doesn’t get a huge amount of opportunities at the elite level but he rarely disappoints when he does – he also rode Macheon Bolt to 2nd place in the Korea Sprint last year.

As for David Miller, it is a stunning success. He began training at Busan last autumn and has steadily built up his stable but is yet to acquire the kind of firepower needed to achieve sustained success. Nevertheless, his place and show rates are good (12.2% and 20.4% respectively) and his horses have consistently been finishing better than their odds have suggested. His success with I’m Your Father will perhaps put potential owners on alert.

I suoi cavalli significativi sono stati Ridgewood Pearl, Sinndar, Alamshar, Azamour, Sea The Stars.
