The favourite Brametot overcame a troubled passage to win the Prix du Jockey Club under Cristian Demuro in a tight finish from Waldgeist at Chantilly on Sunday.

Not much went right for the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt, who was slowly away and raced in the rear of the field under Demuro.

The pair then got into a bumping match with outsider D’Bai, and were still last at the top of the home straight.

After switching to the centre of the track to challenge as the field fanned across the course, Brametot’s class came to the fore as he collared Waldgeist on the line, with Recoletos back in third.

Rouget said: ”It’s unbelievable. Turning in I thought we were finished. He just had too much ground to make up. But this horse is so tough. When Le Havre won this he hadn’t had such a hard time in the Poule d’Essai.”

Taj Mahal, one of three runners for Aidan O’Brien, fared best of the British and Irish challengers in fourth.

Rivet, who finished third behind Brametot in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains last time for William Haggas, pulled too hard early on and compromised his chances under Frankie Dettori.

The trainer’s wife, Maureen Haggas, said: “He was too keen. He missed the break a bit so he chased him up a bit and then just locked on and that was it. He never really settled at all. To a point he ran fine but, because he had been too keen, he didn’t get home.

“We are not really much wiser than we were half an hour ago. Whether this is his trip or we go back to a mile so we’ll go back and have a think about it.”

Paddy Power reacted to Brametot’s win by introducing him at 8-1 for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, while he was cut to 10-1 (from 16) for the race by Sky Bet.

Francia: #Brametot e Cristian Demuro all’ultimo tuffo nel Prix du Jockey Club.

Rajsaman’s Brametot Prevails In Jockey Club Thriller

4th at CHY, Gr. Stk, €1,500,000 G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey Club (10 1/2f) Winner: Brametot (Ire), c, 3 by Rajsaman (Fr)

He started slowly and left it late again, but ultimately it was Al Shaqab Racing and Gerard Augustin-Normand’s Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}) who came up trumps in Sunday’s G1 QIPCO Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly to bring up a Classic double. Just as he had when swooping at the finish to win the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains at Deauville May 14, the bay who started as the 17-10 favourite came from rear under Cristian Demuro with an undisturbed run unlike TDN Rising Star Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and he was able to oust that possibly unlucky rival in the shade of the post and score by a short head. “What a fantastic result and what a fantastic horse,” commented trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, who has won an astounding seven of the last 12 domestic Classics. “My worry was whether he would stay or not, but I was quite confident he would because they stay well on his dam’s side. After that, we have to stay he does stay. It is always frightening when they come from so far behing, but he is a fighter and finds more and more as he gets closer to the horse in front of him, as he did in the Poulains.”

After three starts at Deauville which included a second in the Listed Criterium du FEE in August, Brametot registered a first black-type success in the Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux in October and returned as the main stable principal in the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau over this course and distance Apr. 16. Seemingly blowing his prospects by markedly missing the kick there, he still managed to stamp his authority on proceedings prior to beating Le Brivido (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in that pulsating finale to the Poulains three weeks ago. On that occasion, he had to graft to get to the main group racing in the centre and showed he was far from workshy with a determined flourish and it was a case of deja vu tackling this different test.

Blowing the start as he had in the Prix de Fontainebleau, Brametot was detached by a length throughout the early stages of this Classic as Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) took up pace-setting duties. Angled off the rail by Cristian Demuro before the famous chateau, he was set for a clean run turning for home and needed rousing as he straightened up. Waldgeist was momentarily trapped in a pocket with two furlongs remaining and lost vital momentum, while Orderofthegarter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was denied a passage on the rail as he ran up the back of stablemate Taj Mahal. As Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper) struck for home, Waldgeist arrived with a surge and took it up only for Brametot to subdue him in the nick of time.

Brametot was one of those who missed the outbreak of the Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) in the Rouget stable and the trainer was counting his blessings afterwards. “I was lucky he was not hit by the virus in April, thankfully he escaped,” he commented. “I felt he was not travelling in the race as well as usual, perhaps because of the undulations, and up to the furlong marker I thought he couldn’t win it but his guts saw him through. He has had two real races now and will need a break, so we will probably do what we did with Almanzor last year. We will wait until September.”

Waldgeist’s breeder and part-owner Dietrich von Boetticher was far from disappointed by the outcome and said, “It is a great result and he ran a great race. Andre Fabre decided to come here rather Epsom, which had been the original plan, because this would be easier on the horse and we’d like to see him last. He has a real nice future and lost by very little, as Hurricane Run did before going on to win the Irish Derby. Maybe we can try that [at The Curragh July 1], or the [G1] Grand Prix de Paris [at Saint-Cloud July 14]. We’ll see what the trainer wants to do.”

Brametot is the last foal out of Morning Light, a daughter of the Listed Las Vegas-Slenderella-Rennen winner Mosella which means that she is a half-sister to the triple group 1-winning champion sire Monsun (Ger). That legendary patriarch of the German breeding industry’s full-sister Morning Queen (Ger) is the second dam of the G1 Prix du Cadran heroine Molly Malone (Fr) (Lomitas {GB}) and the G3 Prix Chloe scorer and G1 Prix Saint-Alary, GI Jenny Wiley S. and GI Gamely S. runner-up Wekeela (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). The third dam Monasia was successful at listed level and is a half to the dam of the dual Classic-winning champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}).

Grand Prix Glory For Silver Frost’s Silverwave

Warming up with a return third in the G1 Prix Ganay at Saint-Cloud at the start of last month, Silverwave arrived late on the scene to justify favouritism as connections plot his way back to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud he won last year. Still relatively lightly-raced, the bay also captured the G2 Prix Foy over this course and distance in September before finishing 13th in the Arc and 12th in the Dec. 11 G1 Hong Kong Vase. On his return, he caught the eye when closing from off the pace to be third behind Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the Ganay and the form of that 10 1/2-furlong contest had received boosts in the interim from the fifth and sixth Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) and Guignol (Ger) (Cape Cross {Ire}) respectively. Settled last of the quintet by Pierre-Charles Boudot, he was sent after Talismanic in the straight and mastered that rival in the final furlong for an ultimately comfortable win. “He ran a good race on his return over a trip too short and had done very well since,” trainer Pascal Bary commented. “That was very satisfactory and confirmed he is in great form. Obviously, his next race will be the [July 2] G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.”

Silverwave is one of four black-type performers and two group 1 winners out of the unraced Miss Bio, with the other being the Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Stormy River (Fr) whose numerous top-level placings included a third in the Poule d’Essai des Poulians. Miss Bio is a half to the GIII Prix Miesque and GIII Senorita S. winner Fantastic Filly (Fr) (Myrakalu {Fr}), whose two black-type-gaining daughters include this year’s G3 Prix Imprudence third Silver Storm (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}). The third dam is Riverstar, who is a half to the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine and stakes-producing Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}). The dam has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Siyouni (Fr) named Storm To the Sea (Fr) and a yearling colt by Le Havre (Ire).

La Sardane | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Successful on her third start when taken to the Polytrack surface at Pau in late December, La Sardane finished runner-up to the subsequent G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches fourth Wajnah (Fr) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in a conditions race over this trip at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat Mar. 5 before running ninth a fortnight later in the Listed Prix la Camargo at Saint-Cloud. Runner-up to Senga in the G3 Prix de la Grotte over this course and distance Apr. 16, she arrived here a fresh filly and duly reversed form with that rival to cause an upset. In second early under Franck Blondel, the bay was travelling much the best halfway up the straight and after taking control with 300 metres remaining asserted for a ready success with no excuses for those in behind.

La Sardane looks set to attempt to become the latest in a long line of French expats to prospect for gold Stateside as Team Valor’s Barry Irwin explained. “My trainer in California Neil Drysdale and his wife Shawn Dugan advised me on this filly and sent me pictures and I looked at the form. She is a gorgeous-looking filly and so we decided to go for it,” he said. “The trainer has done an amazing job with her since the Prix de la Grotte and now the plan is to send her to California for the GII San Clemente H. at Del Mar July 23 and then a month later go for the [Aug. 19] GI Del Mar Oaks.” The Wertheimers’s racing manager Pierre-Yves Bureaux said of Gold Luck, “We know now what her best trip is and ten furlongs was too far in the Saint-Alary. She has run an excellent race today and we know what to do now. We will try a group 1 over a mile if she comes out of this okay. It could be the [July 9 G1 Prix] Jean Prat against the colts here, or we could wait for the [G1 Prix de] Rothschild [at Deauville July 30].”

La Sardane is out of a listed-placed half to the Listed Criterium du Bequet-winning Milanais (Fr), whose second placing in the G1 Grand Criterium assured him a career at stud, as well as Veneto (Fr) (Panis) who was a short-neck second to Lucayan (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}) when 50-1 for the 2012 G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Foresta’s unraced 2-year-old colt by Air Chief Marshal (Ire) is named Montgaroult (Fr).

Kitesurf | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Successful over this trip at Compiegne Apr. 7 before finishing runner-up to TDN Rising Star Musawaah(Union Rags) in the Listed Prix de la Seine over 11 furlongs here a month later, Kitesurf took advantage as that rival backtracked to register a first black-type success. Settled in third early tracking Shadwell’s hot favourite, the bay was asked to extend with a quarter mile remaining by Mickael Barzalona and took over with 300 metres to race as Musawaah began to tire. Staying on strongly from there, she was beyond recall as Bebe d’Amour staged a late effort. Godolphin’s John Ferguson said, “She is the perfect combination of Andre Fabre’s skills and Dubawi, as she keeps on improving. The trip was ideal, as was the ground. She has plenty of opportunities for her next race, including the [G2] Ribblesdale [S. at Royal Ascot June 22] or the [G2] Prix de Malleret [at Saint-Cloud July 2], but that is the trainer’s decision.” Bebe d’Amour’s trainer Jean-Yves Artu said of the runner-up, “She is a late-maturing filly who keeps improving with every run. She is more backward than her sister [the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Amour a Papa (Fr)] and I am not yet sure what she is capable of. She may be an autumn filly, so I might wait for the [G3 Prix de] Minerve [at Deauville Aug. 13] and then have a September/October campaign.”

Kitesurf is the first foal out of the G3 Pinnacle S. winner Shimmering Surf, who was also runner-up in the G2 Lancashire Oaks and G2 Prix de Pomone. The second dam Sun On the Sea captured the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies’ S. and is a half to the Intent S. winner Beau Temps (GB) (Mtoto {GB}), who was also third in the GIII La Jolla H. and G3 Prix Saint-Roman. Her fourth dam is the G3 Prix Corrida scorer Radiance (Fr) (Blakeney {GB}), whose Listed Prix des Tourelles-winning daughter Blue Water shares Bering as a sire with Sun On the Sea. Blue Water is in turn the dam of the triple group-winning sire Indian Creek (GB) and the second dam of the G1 Irish Derby and GI Secretariat S. hero Treasure Beach (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Next up from Shimmering Surf is an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Kingman (GB) and a 2017 filly by Golden Horn (GB).

Silver Wolf Wins Ttukseom Cup While Last-Gasp Doraonpogyeongseon Claims SBS Sports Sprint

by gyongmaman

Sunday was a big day of Group race action at Seoul and it ended with Silver Wolf taking the Black Type win in the Ttukseom Cup followed by Doraonpogyeongseon getting the best of the tightest of three-way finishes to the SBS Sports Sprint.

Silver Wolf (Orotorio) started as second-favourite for the Group 2 Ttukseom Cup, the first leg of the Queens’ Tour that will decide the year’s champion filly or mare, and she and the one ahead of her in the market, Haeya, turned things into a two-horse race as they entered the straight.

As it turned out, Silver Wolf was just too strong, gaining the upper hand just over half a furlong out and running on to win by two lengths. Gaenari came home in 3rd just ahead of the fast finishing Gold Blue.

Australian bred Silver Wolf was a A$40,000 purchase from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2014. She finished 4th in this race last year and today was making just her second start of 2017. In total it was her 6th win on her 15th career start. It was a first Korean group race victory for Serbian jockey Djordje Perovic and another milestone in his burgeoning partnership with trainer Song Moon Gil (of Clean Up Joy fame).

One race later was the Group 3 SBS Sports Sprint. Punters ignored most local pundits and sent off Japanese visitor Party Dress off as the favourite ahead of 2015 Asia Challenge Cup winner Choegang Schiller and Success Story, who won the first leg of the Sprint Series, the Busan Ilbo Cup, at Busan last month.

It wasn’t to be for the Japanese pair, with neither Party Dress nor Kimon Avalon being involved and coming home in 8th and 12th respectively. Not was it for Success Story who showed early but weakened to 7th. Instead, it was 60/1 outsider Parang Juuibo who looked like he was about to produce a shock upset as having always been close to the speed, he struck the front just over a furlong out and kept on going.

He came so close. Choegang Schiller flew home in pursuit under Perovic on the outside but in between them came Doraonpogyeongseon. The line arrived with all three together but the photo showed the narrowest of narrow wins for the 4-year-old Doraonpogyeongseon.

The game Parang Juuibo clung on to 2nd ahead of Choegang Schiller. A full four-lengths behind, 90/1 outsider Best Guy brought home the rest.

Doraonpogyeongseon [Kantharos - Smartybegone (Smarty Jones)] was a US$50,000 purchase from the OBS Spring sale of 2-year-olds at Ocala in 2015. It was the four-year-old’s 13th career start and his 7th win. Trained by Min Jang Ki, he’s a stablemate of Success Story. For jockey Ham Wan Sik, it was a successful return to Seoul where he rode Clean Up Joy to win the Grand Prix Stakes last December.

“Doraon” means “Again” or “Return Of” while “Pogyeongseon” was the name of a horse who ran in Korea in the 1980s, winning the Grand Prix Stakes in 1985 and 1986.  That was held at Ttukseom. Maybe someday, there will need to be a Doraon Silver Wolf, or even a Doraon Doraonpogyeongseon.

Terzo Mirco Demuro, sesto Beauty Only
