Lemaire, Fujisawa taste Japanese Derby glory with Rey de Oro

Christophe Lemaire and Kazuo Fujisawa struck gold for the second straight weekend on Sunday, with the jockey and trainer this time teaming up to win their first Japanese Derby with Rey de Oro.
On a glorious afternoon at Tokyo Racecourse, second choice Rey de Oro won the second race of the Triple Crown in 2 minutes, 26.9 seconds over 2,400 meters, three-quarters of a length ahead of Suave Richard, the third pick in the 18-horse field.
The favorite, Admirable, finished third two lengths behind Rey de Oro, who was fifth in the first Triple Crown race last month, the Satsuki-sho.
Last week also at the Fuchu track, Lemaire and Fujisawa combined to win the Japanese Oaks with Soul Stirring, and they did it again on Sunday.
Lemaire has won a Grade 1 race on three consecutive weekends, making him only the second rider in Japan Racing Association history to accomplish the feat, joining fellow Frenchman Olivier Peslier.
Rey de Oro, who is 4-for-5 for his career and collected a winner’s check of ¥200 million, was the 19th colt sent to the Derby by Fujisawa, who now has a record 26 G1 titles to his credit.
“Incredible,” Lemaire said. “I won the Derby in France and now I’ve won the Japanese Derby. I was close last year, but I was confident for today’s race. To be a Derby-winning jockey in another country feels terrific.”
Said Fujisawa, “It’s gratifying to think of all the people who were involved with this horse and supported us to get this far. I’m really, really happy.”
The race unfolded at an ultra-slow pace, with long-shot My Style ushering the pack through the first 1,000 meters in 63-plus seconds on firm going.
Recognizing the pedestrian pace, Lemaire made a superb call to push his mount toward the front on the backstretch. The positioning in the end was the difference between Rey de Oro and Admirable, who traveled close to the rear — Rey de Oro’s winning time was 3.7 seconds slower than the race record.
“I didn’t really have a plan, I thought I’d let the race come to us,” Lemaire said. “He doesn’t start well and we usually have to travel at the back — which is what happened today.
“But the pace was so slow I moved him up on the backstretch, and the horse settled once he was in second position. We turned for home in second and he quickened well once we were on the straight. I knew I’d won it with 100 meters to go and it felt great.”

Anche stamattina ne abbiamo avuto una riprova, se paragonate le due corse, con Cristophe Patrice Lemaire che ha vinto il Derby Giapponese (Tokyo Yushun) sui 2400 metri di Tokyo, in sella a Rey de Oro (King Kamehameha) il quale, a differenza di quanto accaduto nelle 2000 Ghinee giapponesi dove ha perso l’imbattibilità correndo in maniera troppo rinunciataria, è si è inventato di anticipare il gruppo in una corsa sonnolenta prendendo iniziativa dalla dirittura opposta e prendendo tutti sul tempo, guadagnando senza spendere, con l’ingresso in retta già in vantaggio, mantenendo quel margine necessario per portare a casa la mega vittoria nel giorno dei giorni, di fronte a 130,000 spettatori veri. Una mossa davvero decisiva ai fini del risultato, una perla, con la quale si è reso inafferrabile dal serrate di Suave Richard (Heart’s Cry) ed Admirable (Deep Impact) con Demuro che invece ha fatto il Lemaire, finendo fortissimo (il parziale più forte negli ultimi 600 metri) ma ottenendo al massimo un terzo posto. Rey De Oro è di proprietà della Carrott Farm, giubba a strisce orizzontali bianche e verdi, allenato da Kazuo Fujisawa che si è presentato a Nakayama per le 2000 Ghinee locali forte di 3 successi consecutivi. Quel giorno tuto filò per il verso sbagliato in una corsa vinta da Al Ain (Deep Impact), ma il figlio di King Kamehameha (Kingmambo) si è ripreso tutto con gli interessi vincendo il Derby!
Note sul gioco: Sono stati scommessi, solo sul Derby, ¥ 24,979,200,600 ($300 milioni), mentre sull’intera giornata ¥ 39,297,275,800 distribuiti su 12 corse.

Questa è bella. Questa notte in America, ora italiana, ha fornito la prima apparizione pubblica sul suolo americano un rappresentante del sire Frankel, esattamente una femmina, che ha debuttato vincendo e fornendo una prestazione sopra le righe in una maiden special weight per 3 anni a Belmont Park sui 1200 metri mettendo in mostra un cambio di marcia devastante. Guardatela voi stessi nel video. Lei si chiama Rubilinda ed colori sono quelli arancio e verde della Don Alberto Corporation, un gruppo cileno che l’ha anche allevata. La femmina, che ha chiuso da favorita a 3/2 dal 6/1 della mattina, è allenata da Chad Brown (cresciuto sotto l’ala protettiva e gli insegnamenti di Bobby Frankel) ed era montata da Jose Ortiz che l’ha montata con confidenza dandole una partenza tutto sommato tranquilla ed entrando in dirittura con ancora molto da spendere e poi, quando all’improvviso ha spostato al largo, questa ha fatto il vento vincendo di 3 e mezzo. Rubilinda è il primo prodotto della fattrice Rubina (Invincible Spirit) di una famiglia sviluppata dall’Aga Khan. La fattrice, 8 anni, era stata acquistata dalla Don Alberto per $815,706 alle Tattersalls December mare del 2013 gravida di Frankel. In seguito ha prodotto un 2 anni che si chiama Ruffina (Street Cry) e poi un maschio da Empire Maker nato nel 2017.
Frankel, lo conosciamo tutti, è stato campione di Juddmonte dal valore inestimabile, come ultima creazione del genio di Sir Henry Cecil. Imbattuto in 14 uscite di cui 10 a livello di G1, figlio di Galileo e Kind (Danehill), funziona al Banstead Manor Stud per £125,000.
Sempre in tema di prime volte, qualche giorno fa in Germania ha vinto il primo Frankel a scendere in pista sul suolo teutonico. Si tratta di King’s Advice (Frankel), prodotto della fattrice Queen’s Logic (Grand Lodge), sorellastra di Dylan Thomas (Danehill), che ha vinto una maiden a Dortmund per il training di Andreas Wohler ed i colori di Jader Abdullah.
