Comincia una delle settimane più attese a livello locale ad Hong Kong. Domani 7 Dicembre va in scena l’International Jockey Championship presso l’ippodromo di Happy Valley, in una sessione notturna, che metterà in palio $800,000 che equivalgono a circa €96,000 da dividere tra i primi tre arrivati. Saranno 12 i fantini che si daranno battaglia in 4 corse selezionate appositamente dal jockey club locale, in una idea che potrebbe essere sfruttata anche da noi qualora qualcuno si decidesse a mettere una “borsa” congrua e certa. I fantini locali saranno in 4 e sono Zac Purton, Joao Moreira, Douglas Whyte e Derek Leung, contro gli 8 stranieri che rappresenteranno l’Italia con Mirco Demuro, la Francia con Mikael Barzalona, l’Inghilterra con Ryan Moore, l’Irlanda con Pat Smullen, il Giappone con Keita Tosaki, gli Stati Uniti con Florent Geroux, l’Australia con Hugh Bowman ed il Sudafrica con Gavin Lerena. I vari siti locali accreditano di favoritismi una volta Hugh Bowman, una volta Joao Moreira, a seconda della nazionalità dei giornalisti che redigono gli articoli. Noi non saremo da meno ed oltre a fare il tifo per Mirco Demuro, che qui ha regalato spesso e volentieri magie, lo daremo favorito scandendo le sue chances però, oggettivamente, non semplicissime. Tra le quattro corse, ironia del destino, Mirco ha pescato anche la chance in sella a Best Tango (Mujahid), vincitore del Premio Parioli G3 del 2013 in Italia con Rispoli a bordo, e poi venduto ad Hong Kong, senza troppa fortuna onestamente. In 29 corse disputate ha ottenuto infatti una vittoria solamente. Best Tango affronterà 11 avversari sul miglio di Happy Valley e la sua quota in antepost è di 21/1. Migliori chances le avrà nella prima lega del Championship a bordo di Top Bonus (7,50 la quota), poi Mutual Joy (a 9/1), e Bullish Smart a 10/1. Tuttavia dal punto di vista tecnico questo sarà solo un piccolo antipasto di quello che accadrà domenica all’ippodromo di Sha Tin dove andranno in scena le 4 International Races sponsorizzate da Longines.

Quando verranno definiti campi partenti ufficiali e steccati ne parleremo più compiutamente, intanto anticipiamo che nella Hong Kong Cup G1 ci saranno tutti i più attesi come A Shin Hikari (129 di rating), Maurice (124), Designs Of Rome (119), Blazing Speed (118) ed il Fabre Elliptique, finito terzo nel Premio Roma GBI Racing, e titolare di un 114 di rating. Piuttosto, la novità riguarda Potemkin, vincitore a Capannelle con un 115 di rating, che purtroppo non sarà della contesa e ne è stato annunciato già il ritiro anche se non è chiaro ancora il motivo.

Per ora non ci sono defezioni nel Mile G1 con attesa enorme nei confronti del veterano Able Friend, rientrato con un piazzamento e autore di un lavoro che ha soddisfatto quelli del suo team. Attualmente capeggia la lista dei valori più alti con un 119, insieme con Contentment e Logotype. Confermatissimo anche Beauty Only, allevato in Italia, e titolare di un 117 di rating. A 115 c’è la speranza nipponica Satono Aladdin.

Nello Sprint da registrare invece il ritiro di Profitable per Clive Cox, per il resto sarà una corsa a trazione anteriore tra i locali Aerovelocity, Lucky Bubbles, Peniaphobia, Not Listenin’Tome mentre l’Europa sarà rappresentata da Signs Of Blessing e Growl.

Nel Vase tutto confermato o quasi, con una bella sfida europea tra Highland Reel, Silverwave, Big Orange, Garlingari e One Foot In Heaven contro i giapponesi Satono Crown e Nuovo Record, senza dimenticare i locali Helene Happy Star, Flame Hero e Benzini, ed il singaporeno ma argentinian bred Quechua. Ritirato prima della dichiarazione dei partenti Erupt.

Moore and Bowman head betting for International Jockeys’ Championship

The world’s best jockey Ryan Moore faces off against 11 others, including Joao Moreira, Pat Smullen, Mickael Barzalona and Zac Purton, in the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship on Wednesday’s Happy Valley card.

His WBJ belt, which he officially collects for the second time on Friday, may not be on the line but the IJC belt – which is currently held by another contender, South Africa’s Gavin Lerena – is up for grabs.

Moore has won it twice before and was second last year, so is no stranger to the idiosyncrasies of Happy Valley, and he has been priced up as the 15-4 joint-favourite along with Hugh Bowman after drawing rides on Catchmeifyoucan, Giant Turtle, Midnite Promise and Beauty Prince.

Moreira, another former winner and Hong Kong’s record-breaking reigning champion jockey, is priced up at 13-2 but is hopeful he can mount a serious challenge.

“Winning would mean job done,” he said playfully, before adding: “It’s a very tough job to get done but it’s always a pleasure to ride in this kind of competition and if I could win I would be delighted. I know I have chances – Good Choice [in leg two] is probably the best of them.”

Moreira’s knowledge of the local form is a big advantage over the international contenders and Lerena, priced up locally at 8-1, admitted he did not know too much about his chances of defending his title.

“It’s fantastic to be here and I’m going in to enjoy myself and hopefully I’ll give every horse a chance of winning.”

Pat Smullen, Ireland’s nine-time champion, is the ninth choice of the punters at 13-1. But Smullen, who heads home on Friday, has travelled to Hong Kong to be involved and is unlikely to go down without a fight.

“It’s always a great competition and it’s an honour to be invited. Some of the best jockeys in the world are here and it’s a great test of yourself. It’s probably the best mounts I’ve drawn in this competition and two of them [Powermax in leg one and Team Sweet in leg two] look to have serious chances.”

On which rival he was most keen to beat, Smullen added: “One? I want to beat the 11 of them!”

In the International Jockeys’ Championship all 12 jockeys ride in each of the four races – races four, five, seven and eight on the card – with 12 points for a win, six for second and four for third.

Racing UK has announced a non-exclusive deal to show 63 Hong Kong fixtures in HD this season, starting with the International Jockeys’ Challenge card. At The Races has already laid out plans to cover racing from Hong Kong, with punters in Britain now able to bet into the massive pari-mutuel pools in the territory.
