Si tratta della corsa che ferma una nazione. Molti lo sanno, e difatti la chiamano semplicemente Melbourne Cup G1 in programma martedì mattina 1° Novembre, ora europea, alle 4,00. Definito il campo dei partecipanti che sarà di 24 unità sul tracciato di Flemington e sulla distanza dei 3200 metri. Il favorito è Hartnell (Authorized) che ha pescato lo steccato al centro dello schieramento, vale a dire il numero 12. Hartnell è un portacolori di Godolphin, come altri 4 partecipanti del tema dello Sceiccone, che avrà anche in Oceanographer (Sea The Stars) una buonissima chance partendo dall’11. Charlie Appleby poi presenta anche il vincitore della Geelong Cup G3 Quewy (Street Cry) in partenza dal 15. Big Orange (Duke Of Marmalade), quinto lo scorso anno, ha pescato il 7 strappando un sorriso a Michael Bell, ottimo per il 5 anni. La impressionante vincitrice della Caulfield Cup G1 Jameka (Myboycharlie) avrà una notevole chance dal 3, non troppo lontana dallo steccato, ed in formissima conoscendo anche la pista. Più difficile il ruolo del Tony Martin’s Heartbreak City (Lando) che ha pescato il 23. Ha vinto l’Ebor Handicap a York, cosa non facile ma in maniera agevole con 4 lunghezze di margine, ed avrà in sella Magic Joao Moreira a bordo, che dovrà dunque inventare qualcosa. 
Willie Mullins, che lo scorso anno con Max Dynamite (Great Journey) fece secondo, sellerà Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow), vincitore dell’Irish St Leger G1 che fa linea buonissima (pensare anche ad Order Of St George terzo di Arc) ed avrà in sella Frankie Dettori fresco di inaugurazione del suo primo profilo Twitter ufficiale, diventando ancora più social che mai (lo trovate su @frankiedettori_ ), che dovrà anche lui inventare qualcosa dal 24 di stecco, l’ultimo. Aidan O’Brien si giocherà la chance Melbourne Cup G1 con Bondi Beach (Galileo), fresco di buone linee irlandesi, che ha pescato il 5 ed è a 9/1. Padre Aidan è sempre alla caccia del record di G1 di Bobby Frankel che ne vinse 25 in un anno. Il trainer irlandese è al momento fermo a quota 22. Da sottolineare come Matt Cumani, figlio di Luca, sellerà Grey Lion (Galileo e Grey Lilas), secondo di Qewy a Geelong, e con una chance a 40/1.
