A Maryland-bred Curlin colt for $450,000 topped the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale

Chuck Zacney loves the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale. And for good reason.

Two years ago the Cash is King Stable owner took home a Street Boss   filly from the auction for $30,000 who went on to win this year’s Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). To date Cathryn Sophia has won or placed in all nine of her starts and has earned more than $1.2 million.

Zacney returned to this year’s sale in Timonium, Md., on Oct. 4, buying a Maryland-bred Curlin   colt for $450,000 and an Uncle Mo   filly for $290,000 that helped fuel increases in gross and average and bucked the downturns seen in other yearling markets so far this year.

Fasig-Tipton reported 267 yearlings selling for $6,356,600, good for an average price of $23,807 and a median of $10,000. A year ago, Fasig-Tipton sold 274 head for an average of $19,083 on gross receipts of $5,288,800, with the same $10,000 median price.

The 55 horses that failed to sell this year represented a paltry 17% of those offered, compared with a 25.3% RNA rate in 2015.

“It shows consignors that when you bring the right horse here you will be rewarded for it,” said Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale director Paget Bennett. “It was very exciting for a Maryland-bred to top the sale and it was thrilling for the sales company. Hopefully we can build on it.”

The sale-topping Curlin colt, the second-highest price in the sale’s history behind a $500,000 Silver Deputy colt sold in 2004, was consigned by Becky Davis and was one of the buzz horses in the sale. The colt, a half brother to multiple stakes winner Awesome Flower and produced from a half sister to 2009 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I) winner Well Armed, was bred in Maryland by Davis’ parents, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman, and their long-time partner Milton P. Higgins III.

Zacney, who bought 2005 champion 3-year-old male Afleet Alex from the Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, said he and two partners were prepared to go higher to acquire the colt, the first foal he has owned that was sired by Curlin, the two-time Horse of the Year that stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms near Lexington.

‘He is a beautiful horse and has a great head on his shoulders,” said Zacney. “I have always been a big fan of Curlin and thought it was time to reach out and get one. He definitely was the standout. When I first saw him Sunday (Oct. 3), I thought he would bring $300,000. And then, on the day of the sale everybody was talking about him I thought it would be well over $400,000. We were prepared to go to $600,000 if necessary, so we were happy to get him for $450,000.”

Davis said the sale-topper was prepped for the sale by top South Carolina pinhooker Cary Frommer, with whom the Bowman family has a working relationship, Frommer had the colt entered in the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale but withdrew him in favor of the Midlantic sale.

Davis said the colt brought more than double his reserve price.

“When we got here everyone was saying he was the best horse in the sale, but I’d heard that before with horses I had only to be disappointed,” the consignor said. “The most fulfilling part is that we bred and raised him.”

The Uncle Mo filly purchased by Zacney, consigned by Darby Dan Farm, was bred in Pennsylvania by Thomas G. McClay and is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Uptown Boy.

Overall, Zacney purchased six yearlings for $993,000, making him the sale’s leading buyer.

“It (Midlantic yearling sale) has always been one of my favorite sales and I was looking forward to it,” said Zacney, who bought two horses at the Keeneland September yearling sale through his trainer John Servis. “I rarely make it to Kentucky,” the owner said.

ùPrimo giorno di Tattersalls October Yearling Sales e Godolphin subito molto attiva per cercare di acquistare il miglior puledro 2017. Prima un veloce resoconto. Dei 551 puledri che passeranno il primo giorno ne sono stati offerti 165, di cui venduti 136 per un movimento completo di £31,240,000 (+5.3%) con una media di £229,706 (-4.8%) ed il mediano a £145,000 (-9.4%).
Come detto Sheikh Mohammed ha dato precise indicazioni a John Ferguson che ha razziato tutti i Dubawi disponibili sul mercato. Alla fine del primo giorno ne ha comprati 8 spendendo complessivamente £6,825,000gns, di cui £2,6 milioni per uno, cioè il Lot 39, un figlio di Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) appunto ed erede della buonissima Fallen For You (Dansili), vincitrice di Coronation Stakes G1 che potete ammirare nella foto qui accanto. Proprio mentre scriviamo, nel day 2, partito ancora forte John Ferguson che ha speso altri £2,1 milioni per un altro figlio di Dubawi e Nature Spirits (Beat Hollow), mentre il Coolmore ha fatto sentire la presenza acquistando il Lot 244, un sauro da Frankel e Peeress (Pivotal) spendendo £1,3 milioni, presentato dal Cheveley Park Stud ed acquistato in partnership dal gruppo irlandese insieme con i sudafricani della Mayfair.

Si comincia! La prima giornata del catalogo delle Tattersalls’ Book 1 Yearling Sale è appena iniziata. Si tratta forse della migliore asta in assoluto in termini di qualità in Europa, dove cercare il proprio campione. Il Book 1 propone 551 lotti, tutti eligibili per il Bonus da £25,000. L’asta ha attratto una collezione di alta classe tra le famiglie degli yearlings, di cui 17 sono figli dell’esaltante Frankel (Galileo). Ma non è tutto: L’asta include almeno 50 lotti tra mezzi fratelli o fratelli pieni di vincitori di G1 o piazzati Classici, e ben 243 di Group/Listed winners. Diciannove dei primi 20 stalloni in classifica tra Inghilterra ed Irlanda sono ben rappresentati, inclusi 45 cavalli figli di Galileo e Sea The Stars. C’è attesIntello rappresentato con 15 puledri, ed il duplice vincitore di G1 Declaration Of War con 13, mentre il campione sfortunato ma mai domo Al Kazeem ne ha 6 in catalogo, della prima annata da stallone abbastanza fallimentare causa fertilità. L’Highclere Stud proporrà 29 yearlings, il Castlebridge Consignment 24, mentre il Newsells Park Stud ne proporrà 23.
