Found leads them home in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

Four-year-old filly Found, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) winner, led a sensational 1-2-3 finish for trainer Aidan O’Brien when she took the €5 million Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), Europe’s premier race, Oct. 2 at Chantilly.

Owned by Coolmore and partners and ridden by Ryan Moore, Found snapped a five-race string of seconds when she took over from pacesetter Vedevani and then held off stablemates Highland Reeland Order of St George to get the victory. The three top finishers were sired by Coolmore’s internationally successful stallion Galileo.

Postponed, the 2-1 favorite to stay unbeaten in five starts this year, was alongside Found in the straight but failed to kick on and finished fifth.

Ideally positioned in midfield along the rail early, Found came out to challenge for command in the straight after unleashing a brilliant rally from more than a quarter-mile out. She easily overhauled Vedevani and stayed on strongly for her third win at the highest level.

Found covered 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) in 2:23.61 on turf rated as good, improving to 6-10-2 from 19 starts.

An unlucky ninth behind winner Golden Horn in last year’s Arc, Found was a scintillating victress two starts later in the Breeders’ Cup Turf atKeeneland, where she outbattled that rival to a half-length triumph. She could return for this year’s edition of the race Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

Michael Tabor, a co-owner in the top three Arc finishers, expressed his awe to England’s Press Associaiton.

“First, second, and third in the Arc—it’s unbelievable,” he said. ”It’s just incredible. Words can’t describe it. It’s just amazing.

“This is the time of year for (Found). We knew we had a chance, but this is the Arc and it’s a tough race. It’s unreal. She’s a hardy, tough filly. I don’t have to say anything because her results speak for themselves, so it’s fantastic.”

Tabor campaigns Found and Highland Reel with Susan Magnier and Derrick Smith as part of the Coolmore partnership and the trio partners with  Lloyd Williams of Australia, the majority owner in Order of St George.

O’Brien said the Arc had always been a goal for Found, who won at 5-1 odds.

“We’ve had our eye on this for a long time,” O’Brien said. “When Ryan rode her as a 2-year-old and said she could win an Arc—he was obviously right.”

Found won the Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-I) as a 2-year-old. She came into this year’s Arc on the back of five runner-up finishes in group I races, including her finish three-quarters of length behind Almanzor in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes last time out Sept. 9. That race was preceded by the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup, and Tattersalls Gold Cup.

”We came here very hopeful after a good run last time,” O’Brien said.

Dual Derby winner Harzand finished ninth in the Arc, and Makahiki, carrying Japan’s decades-long hope of an Arc win, came in 14th in the field of 16.

Found was bred in Ireland by Roncon, Wynatt, and Chelston, a group associated with Coolmore. Her dam is English and Irish group I winner and highweight Red Evie (Intikhab), also the dam of group III-winning full sisters Best in the Word and Magical Dream.

“It’s the race that all of America watches and obviously Europe does, too, so the whole world is watching,” Tabor said of the Arc. “It’s a special race to say the least.”

Davvero epico.

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe : Exceptionnelle Found !

fou

Créé le 2 octobre 2016,  par Jean-Baptiste Morel

Incroyable ! Aidan O’Brien fait le triplé ! C’est exceptionnel ! La géniale Found l’emporte, devançant Highland Reel et Order of St George.

Found leads home Arc one-two-three for O’Brien

BY STUART RILEY, 2 OCT 2016

Report: France, Sunday

Chantilly: Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Group 1) 1m4f, 3yo+

FOUND, so often the bridesmaid this season, enjoyed her finest hour as she led home an Aidan O’Brien-trained one-two-three in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

RELATED LINKS,   Arc result

Runner-up in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Coronation Cup, Prince of Wales’s, Yorkshire Oaks and Irish Champion Stakes on her last five starts, the 2014 Prix Marcel-Boussac winner got her head in front when it mattered most.

And she did it with style, bursting between horses under Ryan Moore to power clear of stablemate and King George winner Highland Reel, with Gold Cup hero Order Of St George claiming third. Siljan’s Saga was the first horse not sired by Galileo to cross the line in fourth.

Settled in midfield, off a far stronger pace than is sometimes the case in the Arc, Moore negotiated the perfect path round the inner on the long home bend, before angling out and threading the four-year-old filly through the narrowest of gaps between Order Of St George and Postponed and then flying past the fading pacesetter Vedevani as Found powered to her crowning glory.

Last year she finished second in four Group 1s, before turning over the Derby, Eclipse, Irish Champion and Arc hero Golden Horn in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. This time she claimed Europe’s richest race for herself at odds of 6-1, to take her tally of Group 1 victories to three and earn quotes of 6-4 with William Hill for the defence of her Breeders’ Cup Turf crown.

For O’Brien it was a remarkable achievement. To saddle the first three home, from three runners, in Europe’s premier middle-distance race must rank among the finest achievements of an unparalleled career. It was also his 18th Group/Grade 1 winner on the Flat worldwide in 2016.

“It’s unbelievable,” said O’Brien, who labelled it the greatest training feat of his illustrious career. “I can’t describe it. You couldn’t even dream of that. How could you say anything is higher than this? It is the most difficult race. For that to happen it is incredible. Ryan gave her a brilliant ride.

“I am so delighted for everyone. We were worried about the ground for Order Of St George but happy with the other two. It’s a massive team effort and I’m so privileged to be part of it and they were all by Galileo.”

Part-owner Michael Tabor, in whose colours Found ran, said: “First, second and third in the Arc is unbelievable. Words can’t describe it. This is the time of the year for Found so we knew we had a chance in the Arc.”

Favourite Postponed, who had won his last six starts – including four Group 1s – travelled well for Andrea Atzeni in a prominent position but failed to pick up in the straight, finishing fifth.

“That’s racing, we’ll take it on the chin,” said trainer Roger Varian. “Andrea said he broke well but was trapped wide early on. He said he went into the big bend on the bottom on the wrong lead and took a while to switch on to the right lead. He didn’t pick up the way he usually can in the straight.”

Kevin Ryan’s The Grey Gatsby, who won the 2014 edition of the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, finished last and the trainer said: “That was very disappointing. He travelled good and was in a lovely position but it  wasn’t his day. He just didn’t fire up the straight.”
