Big Orange wins second Princess of Wales’s Stakes

BIG ORANGE won a second successive renewal of the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes as he made all to see off The Grey Gatsby under James McDonald.

Sent off at 8-1 in an open renewal, Big Orange was made to work to reach the front and set a sound pace, but his stamina meant he had enough in reserve to stave off the strong-travelling favourite, who was having his second run over 1m4f.
History repeating
Last year Big Orange had been the 25-1 outsider of the field and his rivals had allowed him too much rope, but this time it required plenty of daring from McDonald, who set good fractions and let up only briefly just after halfway.
The field behind fell into perfect single file, with Exosphere third The Grey Gatsby second-last. They fanned out as they approached the dip, with The Grey Gatsby going particularly strongly, but while he and Exosphere gave chase they never looked like pegging back Big Orange, who still led by two and a half lengths at the line.
Trainer Michael Bell said: “He loves his racing and this track. I was pleased with how the race panned out with them in Indian file as it meant those behind had to make up more ground.”
Bell added: “He’s the most charming horse to train and a joy to have around. He’s been in very good form at home. We skipped the Gold Cup at Ascot because of the ground, this was second choice and we’re very glad we did.”
Big Orange went on to win the Goodwood Cup after his shock success last season and is now a general 4-1 for that race (from 6s). He also finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup and is 33-1 from 50s for that race, though Bell was lukewarm about the prospects of a second bid afterwards.
Gatsby bound for York
McDonald, Godolphin’s jockey in Australia, was riding his first Group winner in Britain and he said afterwards: “He’s a beautiful ride, an absolute gem. He’s a gentleman out on the course and was out in front when it mattered.”
Kevin Ryan, trainer of The Grey Gatsby, said: “The winner is a good horse. It was a funny race in Indian file, Jamie was in a predicament and had to sit and suffer. The race hasn’t panned out for him, but I’m delighted with him.”
Ryan also revealed that the Juddmonte International Stakes at York, for which he is a general 10-1 chance, is likely to be The Grey Gatsby’s next run.
Mehmas: could now go to Goodwood

Mehmas a convincing winner of July Stakes

MEHMAS scored convincingly as the 11-4 favourite under Frankie Dettori, holding off a late charge from Intelligence Cross as Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien were denied a quick double.

The son of Acclamation was denied on soft ground at Royal Ascot by a Ballydoyle contender in the form of the much lauded Caravaggio, however on this occasion once Dettori hit the front with over a furlong remaining there was no catching him on this quicker surface.
Under a hold-up ride from Ryan Moore, Intelligence Cross rallied in the closing stages but could not land a blow in finishing second at 7-1. Broken Stones came third at 8-1 for trainer Kevin Ryan.
“He’s very uncomplicated,” said Dettori. “He has a kick so it’s up to me to push the button.”
This was a fifth success in seven years in this race for the Hannon yard, as Richard Hannon jnr continued the dominance of his father, and he was delighted with the performance of his charge.
“He really deserved that after the Coventry. He’s a professional and is much better on fast ground,” commented Hannon.
The next task for Mehmas looks likely to be the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, given the owner Al Shaqab Racing’s affinity with the race. Hannon continued, “We’ll go to Goodwood and the Richmond Stakes next as that meeting is sponsored by his owner.”

HOUSESOFPARLIAMENT was cut to 12-1 for the St Leger after making a late rally under Ryan Moore to win the Bahrain Trophy and provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with the perfect start to the July festival.
The son of Galileo was last seen finishing fourth in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and demonstrated here that the extra furlong was well within his capabilities.
Since being upgraded to a Group 3 contest in 2009 this race has proved a decent pointer to the St Leger, and Housesofparliament will be hoping to emulate the 2011 Bahrain Trophy winner Masked Marvel who went on to win the Doncaster Classic two months later.
Coolmore’s Kevin Buckley said: “That was the best ground he’s encountered all year and it was obviously to his liking. He saw out the step up in trip fine, Ryan said he probably went a little sooner than he wanted to but the horse responded well. We’ve got more options now and let’s hope the weather stays good.”
Tracking the leaders in mid-division, Moore made his move inside the furlong marker as the field split into two. The pace looked to be stronger on the far side with Harrison and Harbour Law battling it out, however Housesofparliament and Platitude rallied late to contest the finish in the middle of the track.
