Avrà in sella Jim Crowley.

Le altre monte: Barzalona su Cloth Of Stars, Kevin Manning su Moonlight Magic, stretto consanguineo di Sea The Stars

Minding prep ‘not ideal’ but Moore keeping faith

 BY MARK SCULLY7:30PM 2 JUN 2016

RYAN MOORE admits Minding “hasn’t had an ideal preparation” for Friday’s Investec Oaks but insists he is not scared of any of her eight rivals.

Minding has by far the strongest form in the book among the nine fillies set to contest Friday’s Classic and is 9lb clear of her nearest rival, Turret Rocks, on official ratings.

However, the brilliant 1,000 Guineas winner at Newmarket suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Jet Setting in the Irish 1,000 Guineas less than a fortnight ago on soft ground.

RELATED LINKS,   Investec Oaks card

Connections also reported Minding bumped her head on the stalls at the beginning of the race and Moore concedes that combination does not make for the ideal build up to her third Classic of the season.

“My high opinion of this filly is well-known and I was gutted that she got beaten in the Irish 1,000 Guineas,” said Moore in his Betfair blog.

Moore, whose only Oaks success to date came in 2010 with Snow Fairy, added: “It was a late decision to run in the race after Ballydoyle was found to be off-colour and the fact that she banged her head coming out of the stalls didn’t help.

“However, ultimately, I think that she just found the ground too soft for her against a filly who relished the conditions, and the pair did pull ten lengths clear of the third.

“So, yes, you could say that she hasn’t had an ideal preparation for this race and that she would want better ground, though it can dry out very quickly at Epsom.”

‘Stamina to prove’

Minding would become the first filly since Kazzia in 2002 to complete the 1,000 Guineas-Oaks double if she can justify her short price and Moore is not too concerned by her ability to see out the 1m4f trip.

Moore said: “She obviously has her stamina to prove but I think she will stay okay, and you have to look at the opposition when making those kind of assessments.

“In my opinion she will stay well enough in this company, as I think the formbook tells you that she goes into the race as much the best filly and, to be honest, I am struggling to see one that I am afraid of.”

Trainer Hugo Palmer aired his doubts about Minding seeing out the 1m4f journey and believes his runner, Architecture, represents a safer bet on stamina grounds.

Moore disagrees though and said: “Because Seventh Heaven didn’t handle the track when beating Architecture at Lingfield, it has been suggested that she won’t handle Epsom. I don’t buy that argument myself.

“Lingfield was hard and rough and had holes in it – I walked the track beforehand – and I think we can rest assured that Epsom will present a better surface.

“Seventh Heaven is a nice, big, scopey filly with improvement in her, but soft ground could be a worry for her, and I don’t think Architecture is a guaranteed stayer.”

Rocks the danger

Turret Rocks

Turret Rocks: Has the rain hindered her chances?

Moore nominated Turret Rocks as his main danger but suggested the rain at Epsom this week may have dented the chances of the Jim Bolger-trained filly.

“Turret Rocks is the main form danger to me on her Boussac second and she ran well enough when sixth to Minding in the Guineas, but she has always been thought of as a good or fast ground filly so that would have to be a concern,” he said.

Going update

The ground at Epsom had dried to good to soft, soft in places on Thursday afternoon, despite more than 27mm of rain hitting the track earlier in the week.

“The ground has done exactly what we’d have expected it to do after a dry 24 hours,” said clerk of the course Andrew Cooper. “It’s still slow-side ground for sure, but I thought it was 70 per cent good to soft and 30 per cent soft, walking it today.

“The mile-and-a-half start is on the slow side, and anything from a mile round to the seven at the top of the hill is a slow point. On the assumption it stays dry there’s a chance it will have dried enough to remove the soft in places in the morning.”

Cooper said there is the possibility of “spits and spots” of rain around lunchtime on Friday, but the forecast anticipates a largely dry afternoon.
