Oaks shock as Tapestry downs Taghrooda
Report: York, Thursday
Darley Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1) 1m4f, 3yo+ fillies & mares
TAPESTRY caused a huge upset to defeat the previously unbeaten Oaks and King George heroine Taghrooda and lift the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Having beaten the boys at Ascot last time, Taghrooda was sent off 1-5 to make it five wins from five runs and over a furlong out it looked likely that would be the outcome.
However, having been held up last by Ryan Moore, Tapestry came with an irresistible late run to master Taghrooda close home at 8-1, with a yawning seven-length gap back to Tasaday in third.
Volume made sure it was a truly-run race, setting a decent early gallop under Richard Hughes, with Taghrooda settled fifth and Tapestry anchored last.
The field bunched early in the straight but as the majority came under pressure, Paul Hanagan was the one sitting pretty as Taghrooda travelled with ease.
Within the final two furlongs, Hanagan made his move and the favourite bounded into a clear lead but it was not a decisive one and Tapestry came from the pack to throw down her challenge.
The two locked horns for the best part of the final furlong before the exquisitely bred Tapestry landed the knockout blow to register one of the biggest upsets of the season.
Having been one of the top juveniles last year, Tapestry failed to shine on her seasonal debut this year, trailing home last in the 1,000 Guineas.
Following a break she showed more in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and built on that further with a narrow second in the Irish Oaks last time.
“She went weak from halfway in the Guineas, which was probably down to pushing her in the spring,” commented winning trainer Aidan O’Brien.
He added: “She had a break after that and the lads have done an unbelievable job to get her back. What she did in the [Irish] Oaks was extraordinary and Ryan produced her unbelievably today.”
Moore said: “She’s high class and I’d say the runner-up lost little in defeat.”
Of the second, Hanagan said: “I didn’t think there were many excuses, we were just beaten by a very good horse.”
Following her defeat, Coral eased Taghrooda to 10-1 (from 4-1) for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Tiggy Wiggy: make it five wins from seven starts at York

Tiggy Wiggy blasts to Lowther success
Report: York, Thursday
Pinsent Masons Lowther Stakes (Group 2) 6f, fillies
TIGGY WIGGY showed battling qualities to match her blinding speed to make it five wins from seven starts in what looked a high-class renewal of the Lowther Stakes.

Out like a greyhound from the starting stalls, Tiggy Wiggywas immediately into a clear lead and had enough left in the tank to repel the challenges of market rivals Cursory Glance and Anthem Alexander inside the final furlong.
Her unrivalled early speed helped Tiggy Wiggy lower York’s two-year-old 6f track record, stopping the clock in 1m 8.90s, faster than the previous best of 1m 9.28s and completing the course two seconds faster than Mubtaghaa (1m 10.97s) achieved in the opening sales race.
In victory, Tiggy Wiggy also gained her revenge on third-home Anthem Alexander, who defeated the winner at Royal Ascot in the Queen Mary Stakes, for which she had to shoulder a 3lb penalty and she lost little in defeat.
The same can be said for runner-up Cursory Glance, who stuck to the task well to chase the winner home in the final furlong and remains at the head of next year’s 1,000 Guineas market.
Fractious in the parade ring, Tiggy Wiggy was expertly maneuvered to post by Hughes, who was keen to tack across from stall two as his mount took a length out of the field as the gates pinged open.
Although challenged within the final furlong, Hughes never appeared anxious despite Tiggy Wiggy being previously unproven at 6f and she had plenty more to give when he finally asked for a finishing effort.
“I just sat on her and held her mane,” said Hughes, playing down his part in the win. “She travelled ever so easy but changed her legs a good few times and I think she’s better when the ground is a bit slower.
“She got the six furlongs well but we thought she would.”
Paddy Power introduced the winner at 6-1 for the Prix de l’Abbaye but winning trainer Richard Hannon suggested it would be the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes against her own sex next.
Commenting on Cursory Glance, trainer Roger Varian said: “Of course I’m disappointed not to win but I’ve got to be really pleased with her performance.
“She ran a huge race and I think we’re going to see a better filly when she’s upped in trip.”
Cursory Glance is the general 12-1 favourite for the Guineas.
