Intrinsic denies Muthmir gamble in 32Red Cup

Report: Goodwood, Saturday

32Red Cup (Stewards’ Cup) 6f 3yo+

INTRINSIC finished fast to win a competitive 32Red Cup at Goodwood as heavily-backed favourite Muthmir could only manage fifth.

Intrinsic travelled well throughout but Richard Hughes had to correct his mount in the closing stages after the horse drifted badly left, but came through and won well by a length.

For favourite backers it looked to be going well, as Muthmir was travelling nicely, but faded into fifth in the last furlong. Ninjago was second, Alben Star third and Ruwaiyan fourth.

Instrinsic’s jockey Richard Hughes said: “I’m riding a Group horse in a handicap. He idled in front but he is a very good horse. I always thought he was a certainty for the last couple of days.

“He has so much quality this horse. He shuffled down the hill a bit but he travelled so well. I hope he is a Group 1 horse for [owner] Malih Al Basti, it’s nice he’s got a good horse. I really thought he was my banker at the end of the week.”

This is a first win the race for trainer Robert Cowell, who said: “We knew he was good. It’s easy to say afterwards but we were never confident, just very hopeful.

“We think he’s stakes class and Hughesie said so in his [Racing Post] column today. It’s very tough to win a race like this but we think he is pretty useful and he has shown it today. He has all the right attributes to go far.”

Betfred were also impressed by the perfromance and Intrinsic is now in from 40-1 to 14-1 for the Sprint Cup at Haydock next month.

Richard Hannon was pleased with Ninjago, who finished second, but was no doubt unsurprised with the winner as stable jockey Richard Hughes chose to partner Intrinsic over Ninjago.

Hannon said: “Ours ran a cracker, he’s a lovely horse for these big handicaps and I’m sure there’ll be another for him at York.”

Equally pleased was Richard Fahey responisble for Alben Star who was just beaten a neck into third.

Fahey said: “He’s such a good, hardy horse, a proper tough handicapper. I’ve been wanting to give him a break for a while, he was on the go all through the winter, but he keeps coming out and doing lifetime bests.

“Fourth in the Wokingham, now third in this. I’m sure there’ll be one of these big handicaps in him one day.”

Dane O’Neill thought the draw played against favourite Muthmir and said: “We didn’t get a very good draw. We were out wide, and I would have liked a bit of a stronger pace. As for where next, we’re just deciding whether to go five or six furlongs with him.”

Sultanina sails home to bring up Gosden treble

Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1) 1m1f192y, 3yo+ fillies & mares

SULTANINA, runner-up in the Lancashire Oaks to stablemate Pomology last time, bridged the gap to the top level to cap an excellent week for trainer John Gosden.

Seven days on from Taghrooda’s victory in the King George at Ascot, Gosden was grateful to another exciting filly as the 11-2 chance handled the drop back in trip with ease.

William Buick, racing in the colours of owner-breeders Normandie Stud, came with a late charge to conquer French raider Narniyn, who was backed into 7-4 favourite just before the off.

Gosden, who was winning the contest for a third year in a row following victories with Winsili and The Fugue, celebrated his third Group 1 success in a week as Kingman also struck at the highest level in the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday.

Gosden, who was cut into 1-5 (from 2-5) for the trainers’ title by Paddy Power, said: “She’s gone and won a maiden, a Group 3, was second in a Group 2 and has now won a Group 1, so it’s unbelievable.

“It was a good duel with the Aga Khan filly [Narniyn] but this filly is very classy.

“Philippa [Cooper, of Normandie Stud] bred her down the road, just 11 miles from here, and she always told me this filly was the best and I could never work it out.

“We’re going to enter her on Tuesday in the fillies and mares’ race on Qipco Champions Day in October.

“I might just freshen her for that and go straight there and bring a fresh filly for the autumn.”

With a question mark over the trip for Venus De Milo, Joseph O’Brien tried to make it a stamina test and took the field on before Narniyn took over two furlongs out.

The Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained filly looked like rewarding the late market support, but Sultanina had other ideas as she stuck to her task courageously to run out a convincing winner.

Buick added: “She is held in very high regard and we wanted to creep into the race and, to be honest with you, it was all very straightforward.”

Sultanina was a late call up for the race after ante-post favourite The Fugue sustained an injury and was retired last month.

De Royer-Dupre felt the ground was against Narniyn as she attempted to become the first French-trained winner of the Nassau.

The trainer said: “I think the track is too firm for Narniyn. She changed her legs many times and didn’t really handle the downhill. She did well to finish second but her balance was not correct.

“Her next start will be in the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville in three weeks’ time.”

Barnet Fair gains consolation for Nicholls

32RedSport.com Handicap 6f, 3yo+

BARNET FAIR just prevailed in a three-way finish across the track to claim the 32Red Stewards’ Cup consolation race at Glorious Goodwood.

RELATED LINKS

The well-backed 7-1 winner, trained by David Nicholls and ridden by Cam Hardie, came from stall five, while Mission Approved (18), Tatlisu (17) and Slip Sliding Away (11) emerged from the stands’ side group to fill the placings. Humidor, like the winner drawn low in four, grabbed fifth.

A total of ten non-runners, including five of the seven highest drawn runners, depleted the line-up but the 18-runner field split into two groups before they came together in the final two furlongs.

Barnet Fair, who raced up the far rail throughout, was gaining compensation for his spirited second at Ascot last time.

Hardie, who rode his first winner at the meeting, said: “We were going to bring him here earlier in the week but the owners wanted to give him more time.

“He was a little keen early on and I needed to get some cover and get him switched off. He travelled sweetly in the race and he actually idled a bit in front.”

After riding in the race, James Doyle described the ground as “quick, quicker than yesterday”. The official description is good to firm.
