Newmarket: dry overnight but rain is forecast today,  BY DAVID BAXTER8:10AM 10 JUL 2014 

A DRY night has left the going as good to firm for the start of Newmarket’s July festival, though rain has hit the track this morning.

With steady rain since 7.30am, the going could change before racing, as clerk of the course Michael Prosser said: “These are developmental showers which could yield 5-6mm, mainly this morning.

“The ground remains good to firm but it could be that they are kicking the top off it this afternoon. It doesn’t look like we are going to see the sun for ladies’ day unfortunately.”

Seismos has been ruled out of the Princess of Wales’s Stakes, while Randwick is the other non-runner on the card in the 3.15.

John Gosden: has fine record in Bahrain Trophy

JOHN GOSDEN has dominated the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy (1.40), in recent seasons, winning Newmarket’s St Leger trial the last three times, and he relies on Forever Now to make it four.

An eight-length winner of a Doncaster maiden last time out, the colt is a natural candidate for the race, being a brother to 2012 winner Shantaram.

A top-priced 20-1 for the Ladbrokes-backed Classic, Forever Now is having only his fourth career start this afternoon.

Hugo Lascelles, racing manager to owner Lady Bamford, said: “He came out of his maiden well and though this is a big step up from that it is one he has to take. John is keen to run him. We have given this horse a bit more time than Shantaram but he is not as big a model.”

Newmarket’s July festival is the highlight of the day, but there is a wealth of Flat action, with meetings from Bath, Doncaster, Epsom, Leopardstown and Nottingham.

Stoute seeking tenth win in Princess of Wales’s

The Princess of Wales’s Stakes is the big race on day one and Stoute’s challenge for what would be a sixth victory in ten runnings of the Group 2 race is headed by one of his most progressive middle-distance colts in Arab Spring, the 13-8 favourite, and supported by a runner very much at ease in the grade in 3-1 second favourite Hillstar. It is 10-1 bar the two.

Both have strong connections with the prize, Arab Spring being bred and owned by Ballymacoll Stud who won this two years ago with future Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente. Despite inevitable interest from Australia in Duke of Edinburgh Handicap winner Arab Spring, Ballymacoll insist the horse is “not for sale”.

“It will be his first start in a Group race but we are hoping he is good enough. He has shown enough,” said Peter Reynolds, manager of Ballymacoll Stud.

Hillstar, who ran on late to finish seven lengths behind stablemate Telescope in second place in the Hardwicke Stakes, is the half-brother to 2011 winner Crystal Capella, but Ryan Moore has picked Arab Spring.

Clerk of the course Michael Prosser said weather forecasts had been something of “a moveable feast”, though the track missed the showers on Tuesday and conditions were mostly dry and breezy on Wednesday.

He said: “There’s due to be light rain overnight, into Thursday morning, then brightening up in the afternoon, but that isn’t a given because different forecasts are giving different scenarios. Some give rainfall potentially into the afternoon.

“The going is good to firm and given the uncertainty of the forecast we’ve decided not to irrigate the home straight. We’ve merely irrigated the bend swinging into the straight to ensure it isn’t greasy.”
