Certify back with a bang with Cape Verdi stroll

Report: UAE, Thursday
Meydan: Cape Verdi Sponsored By Dubal
 (Group 2) 1m, f/m

CERTIFY, winner of the 2012 Fillies’ Mile, maintained her unbeaten record as she returned to action with a dominant display in the Cape Verdi.

The filly was one of 22 Godolphin horses suspended from racing for six months last year by the BHA at the inquiry at which her trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni received an eight-year ban and the most high-profile to return to action so far.

Now trained by Al Zarooni’s former assistant Charlie Appleby, Certify was returning from a 489-day absence but showed no signs of rustiness as she travelled smoothly in fifth position of the six runners before effortlessly moving into contention early in the home straight.

Again partnered by Mickael Barzalona, the only jockey to have ridden her in competitive action, Certify moved clear of four of her rivals on the bridle and only had to be pushed out with hands and heels to take care of French raider L’Amour De Ma Vie, the only rival to stake any sort of meaningful challenge.

Appleby said: “I’m delighted. She was training nicely but we hadn’t asked any serious questions and she can only improve on that.

“I’m delighted Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin have given the filly a chance to show what she was as a two-year-old.”

Looking to the future, he added: “I always said the Balanchine [February 20] was the next plan but after that Sheikh Mohammed and Simon Crisford will decide if we run her on World Cup night or take her back to Europe.”

Barzalona said: “She won very easy today. She did the job nicely and will improve for that.”

Breeders’ Cup winner Flotilla, who landed the French 1,000 Guineas last year, proved a major disappointment, fading out of the places having travelled close to the pace through the early stages.

Certify had gone unbeaten through four races as a two-year-old in 2012, beating subsequent 1,000 Guineas winner Sky Lantern in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes on her way to an impressive defeat of Roz in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile.

Mujaarib springs 25-1 shock in G2 Al Rashidiya

 BY TONY SMURTHWAITE5:12PM 30 JAN 2014

Report, Thursday

Al Rashidiya sponsored by DUBAL (Group 2), turf, 1m1f

MUJAARIB shrugged off a lengthy absence to make his Dubai debut a winning one and clinch a quick double for his surprised trainer Mike de Kock and Christophe Soumillon.

De Kock also saddled runner-up and 3-1 joint favourite Mushreq, who was reeled in by a long, late and wide surge from the 25-1 winner, whose trainer felt would need the outing on his first run for 253 days.

Mujaarib was a Grade 2 winner in South Africa only for his form to tail off in the first half of 2013.

His win gave De Kock a third straight success in the Al Rashidiya, a race designed as a stepping stone to the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free at the same distance on Dubai World Cup night, March 29.

De Kock, who trains the winner and runner-up for Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “I’m as surprised as anyone – I did not think he could win.

“He’s had a lot of problems in his life but Sheikh Hamdan has been very patient. Mushreq was probably a bit unlucky he didn’t get out but we’ll take that with both hands.”

Asked which will be the better horse in future races, De Kock said: “I don’t care. I’m just happy to have won today.”

After a false start caused by some of the stalls failing to open, 3-1 joint favourite Steeler and Maputo led the field at a steady pace which contributed to a rough race for some.

Soumillon steered a wide course on Mujaarib which the Trakus timing system in use at Meydan indicated had led to him covering a full eight metres more than Mushreq.

British duo Tales Of Grimm and Trade Storm finished seventh and tenth respectively. Irish raider Brendan Brackan was last of 12.
