SILVANO’S JET WINS DERBY DUEL

Silvano’s Jet (SAF) (pictured, red cap) notched up the biggest win of his career as he ran on gamely to deny the late challenge of Hot Ticket (SAF) in the Gr 2 Betting World Derby over 2400m at Clairwood on Sunday. Abercrombie (SAF) and Patriotic Rebel (SAF) stayed on for the minor placings.

Silvano’s Jet led early from Kalmia and Patriotic Rebel with Savage Wind, The King And I, Victory Emblem, Hot Ticket and Great  Rumpus next best. Abercrobie was further back with Royal Lance and Balse bringing up the rear.

Sky Rise took over about 1200m out with Kalmia relegating Silvano’s Jet to third and they entered the straight in this order. Kalmia took over as Sky Rise quickly backpedalled but Silvano’s Jet was about to regain the lead and did so about 300m out. Kalmia tried to stay with him as Hot Ticket and Patriotic Rebel came out of the pack to chase. Abercrombie also started to make his run wider out.

Silvano’s Jet had a handy lead entering the last furlong and it became clear that the chasing pack was labouring to get to him. The exception was Hot Ticket, who really took off in the closing stages and looked as if he might well get there. Silvano’s Jet always seemed to have something in reserve, though, and Sean Cormack nursed him home without really going for the stick, winning a shade easier than the official margin suggested.

Silvano’s Jet wasn’t winning out of turn here. He had been bumping strong company prior to this and was not disgraced when seventh in a hot field in the Daily News 2000. The opposition here was much more to his liking and he was always likely to have a hand in the finish on his best form.

Hot Ticket was up in class but he clearly likes this sort of distance and has improved significantly over last couple of months. His connections could have a bit of fun with him if he builds on this.

Abercrombie and Patriotic Rebel battled on for the minor prize money but couldn’t quicken sufficiently to trouble the pair in front of them.
