Carberry masterclass as Dude lands National

Report: Chepstow, Saturday, Coral Welsh National (Grade 3 handicap) 3m5½f 5yo+

MONBEG DUDE got the full treatment from Paul Carberry, coming from last to first under the ice-cool rider to give trainer Michael Scudamore the biggest win of his training career in the re-arranged Coral Welsh National.

The 2nd and 3rd fences in the back straight were omitted.

In true Carberry fashion he slowly crept and crept into contention, despite some sloppy jumps from his willing partner. At the third last he was still travelling sweetly but had a lot of ground to make up as Triggerman, also travelling strongly, and hot-favourite Teafrothree set sail for home. It was also at this point that Giles Cross, runner-up in the race in the past two seasons and who had jumped superbly well, was quickly pulled up by Denis O’Regan. With Teaforthree roared into an outright lead by his legion of supporters at the second last, Carberry and Monbeg Dude loomed large on their shoulder, produced with impeccable timing. Carberry’s work was not done, however, with champion jockey Tony McCoy throwing everything at Teaforthree, Monbeg Dudehad to dig really deep to land a famous win at 10-1.

Teaforthree finished half a length away in second, withTriggerman third and Arbor Supreme fourth. ”It is a wonderful feeling. Even jumping the last down the back he was nowhere near so I thought we would be delighted if we could get fifth or sixth. It was an incredible ride,” said winning trainer Scudamore. Rugby star and part-owner James Simpson-Daniel added: “It is an amazing feeling. I had a very small bet each-way and a couple of the other owners backed him as well. Going down the back I thought we were beat and then popping round the corner he was on the bridle. It was incredible.” 

The victory continued the Scudamore family’s fine tradition with the Welsh National. Michael snr rode Creeola to win the race in 1957, while Peter Scudamore – father of the winning trainer – won it four times on Run And Skip 1985, Bonanza Boy 1988 and 89 and Carvills Hill 1991. Paddy Power make the winner a 33-1 shot to follow-up at Aintree in April. the same firm go 20-1 about Teaforthree.

John O’Reilly, part-owner of runner-up Teaforthree, also paid tribute to the winning ride. He said: “We were giving him 16lb and I think that made the difference. Teaforthree ran a fantastic race, but Carberry, what a ride!

“I think AP will be going home in a bad mood but it’s just one of those things. What can you say? We finished second to a good horse given a great ride.”

There was good news for Victor Dartnall and his team after Giles Cross appeared to return unscathed.

The trainer, who landed the first winner since he closed his stables due to an outbreak of equine herpes when Seebright took the final race on the card, said: ”He has run a good race but then got very tired and Denis O’Regan sensibly pulled him up. He seems fine, but I’ll have him checked over.”
