Barney Roy Back To Group 1 Best

Barney Roy | DRC/Erika Rasmussen

The first Group 1 of the evening at Meydan brought a trifecta for Charlie Appleby in the Jebel Hatta with the class act of the field, Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}), claiming his second win at the highest level and his third victory since returning to training after his failed stud career.

Settled towards the rear of the field by William Buick after jumping from the widest gate, the 6-year-old raced a tad keenly at times but made steady progress around the home turn, quickening nicely once switched outside to reel in his stablemates Magic Lily (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Spotify (Fr) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}). The latter had got first run off the bend but had to settle for third at the wire as he was worn down by Barney Roy, with the filly Magic Lily running on determinedly to finish 1 3/4 lengths back for a good second after two wins in Group 2 contests this Carnival.

Barney Roy kept his clean sheet at Meydan following his bloodless win over Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G2 Al Rashidiya on Jan. 30. The latter, who won the Jebel Hatta for Saeed Bin Suroor last year, finished fourth this time around to complete Godolphin’s dominance.

“From that draw in 12, we decided we would have to ride him for luck,” Appleby said. “The horse has not made that easy for William, but that was a great ride in the circumstances. He is just so enthusiastic and keen to get on with things, but once William had him on an even keel in the straight, he was always going to win. He will go to the Dubai Turf and Magic Lily may do so as well. She has had a brilliant year at Meydan. Spotify has run very well also.”

Buick added, “There were a lot of horses in the race with very little chance, but we still had to pass them all. He travels very strongly into the race. I brought him out into the straight and he picked them up easily. He has a nice cruising speed, which is helped by his big stride, but also he loves a flat track like Meydan, where he can use that stride. It’s a testament to the horse and the team at home, who have done a great job with him ever since he stepped into the yard.”

There was trouble in running for the Marco Botti-trained Wait Forever (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who appeared to clip heels when tight for room in the straight and unshipped Andrea Atzeni, who fell in the path of the weakening Al Sahem (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) but was able to take his later ride in the G2 Dubai City of Gold.

Pedigree Notes

Barney Roy was bred in Britain by Australia’s Eliza Park International Pty Ltd, which also operates as Sun Bloodstock. He was the first foal of Alina (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), an unremarkable performer on the racecourse who has subsequently become something of a celebrity in the sales world. Barney Roy was himself a 30,000gns foal but his exploits have ensured that his siblings have been in great demand. Qatar Queen (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), who has been placed three times for Qatar Racing, topped the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale in 2017 when sold for 400,000gns, and the mare’s Dubawi colt was the top price at Book 1 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when bought by Godolphin for 3.6 million gns. Barney Roy’s year-younger half-sister Wisdom Mind (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is a winner and was listed-placed for Joseph O’Brien.

Alina’s dam is the consistent racemare Cheyenne Star (Ire) (Mujahid), who won eight races for Frances Crowley, including two Group 3 contests.

Review

Barney Roy stars as Godolphin dominate G1 Jebel Hatta

Barney Roy continued his brilliant start to 2019 when leading home a Godolphin 1-2-3-4 in the G1 Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates Airline on Super Saturday, 7 March at Meydan, UAE.

The six-year-old, an easy winner of the G2 Al Rashidiya over the same course and distance at the end of January, tacked across from his wide draw and was covered up towards the rear of the 13-strong field by William Buick.

Barney Roy took closer order turning in and showed an electric turn of foot after being switched out in the straight, reeling in Spotify (James Doyle) over half a furlong from home before powering clear to score by a length and three-quarters.

Magic Lily (Mickael Barzalona) stayed on strongly to take second, with Spotify coming home third as Charlie Appleby saddled the first three home. Dream Castle (Christophe Soumillon), successful for Saeed bin Suroor in the 2019 Jebel Hatta, made good late headway to finish fourth to complete a Godolphin clean sweep.

Charlie Appleby said: “Coming into the race, it was never going to be easy viewing because of his draw in stall 12. William and I spoke about it and decided that he would have to play the brave man’s route by dropping Barney Roy in and riding for luck. He was over-racing a bit and, to be fair to William, he has kept the horse where he needed to be and allowed him to do it all the right way round. Once William got him organised in the straight, he was away and class prevailed in the end.

“Barney Roy is always going to need a good gallop because he is so enthusiastic. Spotify was running on his own merits and has run a great race, while Magic Lily has put up another game performance. She has won a Balanchine, a Cape Verdi and now finished second in a Jebel Hatta. She has been a credit to herself and the team.

“Most importantly, Barney Roy was the horse that we were looking to book his ticket in the G1 Dubai Turf and we can look forward to World Cup Night (Saturday, 28 March) with him now.

“I think we have to see how Magic Lily comes out of this race before committing her to the Dubai Turf. She came into this race as well as we have ever seen her – her coat wasn’t right in her previous two runs and she has only really come right in her coat over the last 10 days. She is tough and we will see.”

William Buick said: “We had a very tricky draw in 12 and I had to ride Barney Roy the way I did. Although there were a lot of horses in the race that had very little chance, we still had to pass them all from our position, and Barney Roy travels very strongly. I brought him out in the straight and, when he picked up, he settled the race quite easily.

“He has a huge cruising speed and that is obviously helped by his huge stride. He loves a flat track like Meydan as it allows him to use his stride – when he is out in the open air, he is quite exuberant in the way he moves.

“It’s a testament to the horse and the team at home, who have done a great job with him ever since he stepped into the yard.”

Goldencents’s Wildman Jack Impresses At Meydan

Wildman Jack | DRC/Erika Rasmussen

Doug O’Neill’s good run in Dubai continued in sensational style on Super Saturday with an emphatic display by Wildman Jack (Goldencents), who won the G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint in a new stakes record time of 1:07.61.

A strong tailwind doubtless helped the lowering of the previous track record of 1:08.24, set two years ago by Godolphin’s Jungle Cat (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), but this was nevertheless a dominant performance from the lightly-raced 4-year-old, who made almost all the running from a favourable low draw to streak to a 4 3/4-length victory over the Doug Watson-trained second favourite Ekhtiyaar (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}). The outsiders Laeith (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Drummore (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), both of whom were also drawn on the far side, filled the minor places. Odds-on favourite Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was returning to the track for the first time since early August last year, was prominent until halfway when he started to struggle and ultimately finished seventh of the 16 runners.

“That was insane. I don’t even know what to say,” said the California-based O’Neill, who has experimented this season by bringing a team of 11 horses to Meydan for the duration of the Carnival. “That was so powerful and he looked like a winner very early on in the race. I’m so proud of the whole team surrounding him; Leandro [Mora, assistant trainer] and the crew. I’m now fired up to stay injury-free and go on to the big day. He’s always acted special, but you never know how they’re going to mature. He’s just handled everything like a complete pro.”

Wildman Jack races for his breeder Glenn Sorgenstein’s W C Racing, which also part-owned his sire, Spendthrift Farm’s Goldencents. O’Neill continued, “Tons of credit to the owner, Glenn Sorgenstein, who is just awesome. I watched it with him while on the phone and he’s already packing for the World Cup. He’s such a lover of the sport and I’m blessed to have him as an owner. He loves Goldencents and sent me two pictures of two more babies today.”

The gelding, whose previous two victories came at Del Mar last year over five furlongs, had made just one start at the Carnival before Super Saturday, finishing fourth in the Yahsat Trophy over seven furlongs on Feb. 6.

Winning jockey Fernando Jara added, “I was very impressed by him. He was travelling and cantering around and so relaxed. He’s so fast and didn’t even seem like he was going full speed. He was a different horse today and just got tired going seven furlongs last time. He definitely stepped up today.”

Pedigree Notes

Wildman Jack, who will now be pointed at the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night, is out of the Orientate mare Orientatious, who was sold for $20,000 at Keeneland last November carrying a full sibling to the winner. The 12-year-old mare was herself a treble winner and is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Cherokee Path (Cherokee Run) and to the dam of Canadian Grade III winner Calgary Caper (El Corredor). Her third foal, Wildman Jack is her sole winner to date and she has been mated with Goldencents on three more occasions since then, with 3-year-old and 2-year-old colts on the ground as well as a yearling colt by English Channel.

Loxley back on song in G2 Dubai City Of Gold

Loxley returned to his best when beating G1 winner Defoe in a thrilling finish to the G2 Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By Emirates SkyCargo at Meydan, UAE, on Super Saturday, 7 March.

The Charlie Appleby-trained five-year-old, successful in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville in August, 2018, raced freely in seventh towards the outside of the field for much of the 12-furlong turf contest under Mickael Barzalona.

Loxley was switched out widest of all in the straight and the son of New Approach quickened well to take up the running approaching the final furlong before seeing off the late thrust of Defoe for a short-head success. Mountain Hunter (Saeed bin Suroor/Pat Cosgrave) rallied well in the closing stages to come home third, a further length and a quarter back.

Charlie Appleby said: “Loxley is a horse we have always really liked but, to be honest, has disappointed in both starts at the Carnival this year. It is great to see him get his head back in front with such a nice performance.”

Mickael Barzalona added: “Loxley is a nice little horse and today he travelled a bit strong, but I was lucky to find a way to settle just behind Defoe. When he came into the straight, he did the job well.” (by Godolphin)

AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE R3 (GROUP 1): the winner is Matterhorn

MATTERHORN: Dubai Racing Club//Erika Rasmussen

AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE R3 (GROUP 1)
$600,000 | 2000m (dirt)

Winner: MATTERHORN
Pedigree: Raven’s Pass – Tanaghum (Darshaan)
Owner: HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum
Trainer: Salem bin Ghadayer
Jockey: Mickael Barzalona
Official Time: 2:04.44
Track Record: 2:01.38 – Thunder Snow, 2018
Stakes Record (Meydan Dirt): 2:01.71 – North America, 2018
Margin of Victory: 5½ Lengths

Mickael Barzalona, Jockey, MATTERHORN (1st)—“We have been expecting a lot from him. It took him a little time to understand how to run on the dirt, but last time he ran really well over a mile (finishing second in the Group 3 Firebreak). After that, he has improved a lot. We’re very pleased with him. His quality did the rest. We expect him to improve again.”

Salem bin Ghadayer, Trainer, MATTERHORN (1st)—“We always thought he would handle the dirt well and he has always trained well on it. We were very pleased with his first start when third to our Capezzano in the Firebreak. We knew this longer trip would suit him and the plan was always to be positive on him, so Mickael has given him a great ride.”

Antonio Fresu, Jockey, MILITARY LAW (2nd)—“He broke well, but he couldn’t follow the pace because it was very fast early on. He started taking a lot of kickback and it was hard to come from off the pace. We did it anyway and finished really well. The winner was too good tonight, so we’ll see next time.”

Pat Cosgrave, Jockey, MARK OF APPROVAL (3rd)—“He ran massive. They went really quick. He’s just a solid horse that keeps trying. Well done to the connections for having a go.”
