The front-running Living In The Past gave the crack team of Karl Burke and Danny Tudhope victory in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes, the opening race on day two of the Ebor festival.

The winner was sent off at 12-1 and was not for catching after breaking smartly and making all from stall one.

Speaking to ITV Racing, Tudhope said: “She’s got a lot of natural ability. She got into a nice rhythm and put it to bed at halfway.”

The 15-8 favourite Liberty Beach, having previously raced over only five furlongs, stayed on well in second under Jason Hart but could only get within three-quarters of a length of the winner, with the David Evans-trained Good Vibes back in third.

Winning owner Steve Parkin, who won the Lowther in 2012 with Rosdhu Queen, told ITV Racing: “Seven years ago I won this race and then two days later my dad died. It’s a poignant win for sure.”

Paddy Power were impressed enough to give the winner a price of 33-1 for next year’s Commonwealth Cup.

Karl Burke told Racing TV: “We said to Danny to let her flow without asking her and if she ended up in front that was fine. She got a lovely soft lead. It’s a great result for everybody.”

The well-backed Mums Tipple produced a phenomenal display under Ryan Moore in the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes at York on Thursday, pulling well clear of his 21 rivals in the manner of a Group 1 juvenile.

The Richard Hannon-trained son of Footstepsinthesand was backed into 7-2 from as big as 6-1 and, in spite of a 5lb penalty, duly put 11 lengths between himself and runner-up Rayong, with Klopp Of The Kop back in third.

Hannon said: “We thought Mums Tipple was a very nice horse when he won at Ascot but I haven’t seen a horse of ours win like that for years.

“I’m not sure what strength of depth there was in the race but he looked pretty smart. He’s one of the nicest horses we’ve had in terms of the way he looks, behaves and moves. He’s a little bit different.

“He does his thing at home and to me he looks like he’ll still improve. There are plenty of options for him but he’s entered in all the big ones.”

The winner’s upcoming Group 1 entries include the 6f Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (September 28) and the 7f Darley Dewhurst Stakes (October 12), both at Newmarket, while possible Group 2 challenges could include Doncaster’s Champagne Stakes (September 14) or the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (September 21) at Newbury.

The victory represented an early Christmas present for owners Marian Lyons and Patricia Zanelli – who were gifted the winner last December – and both were understandably thrilled following the resounding success.

“We’re delighted,” the pair told ITV Racing. “Brilliant horse. Fantastic run. There was no danger. I could not have imagined that.”

Speaking to ITV Racing, Moore added: “He’s a big strong boy. He’ll get better and is a man already.”

It was not all smiles for the winning rider, however, as he was handed a two-day suspension by the stewards after the race for “his use of the whip when clearly winning inside the final furlong.”

Mums Tipple was given an opening quote of 12-1 for the Commonwealth Cup by Paddy Power, while Betfair went the same price for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

Enable thrills devoted fans with stunning Yorkshire Oaks win on British swansong

Enable, the sweetheart of British racing, became just the third horse to win the Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks twice when she bowed out on domestic turf with another ready success under Frankie Dettori.

Taking her record to 13 victories from 14 races, and notching over £9.5 million in prize-money in the process, Enable readily shook off market rival Magical to tee up a tilt at a historic third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory on October 6.

Paddy Power cut her to 4-5 favourite (from 10-11) for the Longchamp showpiece event.

An emotional Dettori, who again treated onlookers to a flying dismount, said: “I’m really tearful because this is the last day she will be running in England – it’s special. I’m emotional because she’s so good. She’s amazing and the turnout is fantastic.”

Trainer John Gosden said: “It was a gorgeous performance and there was no point of taking her back as she’s quick from the gates. He [Dettori] said she really quickened the last two furlongs, she really turned it on.

“She likes her training and she likes her racing. I’m glad we have brought her here, it was a lovely prep [for the Arc] and we couldn’t be more pleased with her.

“She has this amazing, competitive mind – if you were married to her you would have to listen. She is a great filly, great constitution and we started life out at Newcastle and she’s done nothing but pleased. I’ve seen some wonderful racemares in my time and she’s one of those.”

Sent off at 1-4, the shortest starting price in her career, Enable was sent straight into the lead by Dettori after a flying break and took her three rivals along at a comfortable pace before moving through the gears at the top of the straight.

Enable was briefly joined on either side by Magical and Lah Ti Dar with just over a couple of furlongs to go, but shook off her rivals with consummate ease and romped home to an easy two-and-three-quarter-length victory.

Gosden added: “She had a battle in the King George, Frankie wasn’t hard on her though, and today she showed her class against the fillies. Now you’ve got a big old mountain to climb in the Arc.

“If she goes back to her three-year-old form, as you saw today, she is mighty tough to beat. But watch out for the three-year-olds as they’re getting the weight.”

Magical picked up just over £91,000 for finishing a creditable second, while Lah Ti Dah came home in third under William Buick and South Sea Pearl trailed in last.
