Qatar Prix Jean Prat (Group 1) 3yo colts & fillies | 1m [Straight]

Fabrice Chappet must be developing a real love of Deauville’s straight mile, after Intellogent and Pierre-Charles Boudot brought the trainer a second career Group 1 success, 15 months after he got off the mark with Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Precieuse on the same track.

Fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club when last seen, Intellogent relished the drop in trip to land the first running of this historic prize since being transferred from Chantilly and its sweeping right-hand bend.

Sent off the fifth choice of the seven-strong line-up by pari-mutuel punters, Fiona Carmichael’s colt held off the supplemented Cascadian to score by a short neck, providing his sire Intello with a first Group 1 winner in a race which took on an unusual dimension as Christophe Soumillon headed for the far rail on the free-running German Guineas winner Ancient Spirit.

Chappet said: “Job done. It didn’t look easy on paper but we knew the horse was in great form and he’s not put in a single bad performance during his career, so I’m delighted.

“We’ve taken our time with him, running only once last year and then avoiding the major opposition while he gained experience, which is what he’s done. Now he’s more mature.”

Intellogent’s best form over a mile was when finishing a close third to the highly regarded Mer Et Nuages – who missed this race through a slight setback and will hopefully return to action in the autumn – since when he has been campaigned over further.

Chappet said: “We’ll have to think about it but the Jacques le Marois is the logical next step.”

With a nod to his Group 1 breakthrough with Precieuse here last year, he added: “This is a track which always produces well-run races, which isn’t always the case on less galloping tracks. It’s always a good idea to run the good races on the best tracks.”

Result and analysis

The reckoning between the French and Anglo-Irish Guineas form over a mile failed to materialise with the sub-par performances of Hey Gaman and Olmedo, who appeared well below the form of their one-two finish in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains back in fifth and seventh.

James Doyle believed that Hey Gaman may not have been in love with the fast ground.

He said: “It’s very disappointing. He just wanted to lug right most of the way and didn’t really get out of first gear. Possibly the ground is a bit quick for him.”

Cascadian had appeared Andre Fabre’s number one juvenile at around this trip last season before injury intervened, and he more than vindicated his trainer’s high opinion in almost reeling in the winner.

As for third placed Gustav Klimt, who had progressed with each run from Newmarket to the Curragh and then Ascot, it is hard to argue this was anything other than a step backwards, albeit the first two are unexposed and clearly improving.

Jockey Ryan Moore said: “He ran a good race and I am happy with him.”

Intello’s Intellogent Wins the Jean Prat

Dropping back in trip after finishing fourth in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly June 3, Fiona Carmichael’s Intellogent (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) proved he had the speed for a mile when springing an upset in Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. Becoming the latest to advertise the strength of that Classic form, the 10-1 shot raced near the pace under Pierre-Charles Boudot and when sent to the front passing the furlong pole stayed on to score by a short neck from TDN Rising Star Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), with another TDN Rising Star Gustav Klimt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a length back in third. “The Prix du Jockey Club was just a shade too far for him–maybe 100 yards too far, but he’d taken it very well and looked in very good form today,” trainer Fabrice Chapet said. “It’s nice to have him as a group 1 winner, he always runs a good race and has done nothing wrong.”

Having made a successful start to his career over a mile at Saint-Cloud in October, Intellogent ran second to Francesco Bere (Fr) (Peer Gynt {Jpn}) in the Listed Prix Omnium II also at this trip at Fontainebleau Mar. 22 before finishing third behind Godolphin’s unbeaten Mer Et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Wusool (Speightstown) in a conditions event staying at the distance at ParisLongchamp Apr. 19. Upped to nine furlongs for the G3 Prix de Guiche next time at Chantilly May 7, the chestnut’s head defeat of Patascoy (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was viewed as below the standard required to win a Prix du Jockey Club but the purists were almost wrong as Patascoy got to within a half length of Study of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) when runner-up there and fellow longshot Intellogent was just two heads further behind. That 10 1/2-furlong Classic had received multiple boosts subsequently, with the sixth-placed Hunting Horn (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) taking Royal Ascot’s G3 Hampton Court S. and finishing third in Saturday’s GI Belmont Derby, the ninth Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) almost winning the G1 Irish Derby and their stablemate Flag of Honour (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) scooping the G2 Curragh Cup.

As the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen hero Ancient Spirit (Ger) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) went alone on the far-side rail, the main group was led by the 23-10 favourite Wusool with Intellogent tracking the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains runner-up Hey Gaman (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). As Wusool gave way inside the final quarter mile, Cascadian made his effort stand’s side but Intellogent proved the stronger in the run to the line. The Poulains hero Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration of War) was disappointing for the second time, fading to be last of seven. “He had only run once last year at two, so I got him going early this year as he needed the experience,” Chappet added of the winner. “This was his first race on a straight course, so it bodes well and the logical next step in the [Aug. 12 G1 Prix] Jacques le Marois here.”

Intellogent’s dam Nuit Polaire (Ire) (Kheleyf), who is also responsible for the listed-placed Lightupthenight (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), is kin to the G2 Oaks d’Italia winner Night of Magic (Ire) (Peintre Celebre). In turn the dam of the dual G1 Preis von Europa heroine Nightflower (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), Night of Magic’s GSP full-sister Neele (Ire) produced four black-type winners headed by the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Nutan (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) and the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin heroine Nymphea (Ire), also by Dylan Thomas. This excellent German family has also thrown up another Deutsches Derby winner in Next Desert (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) and Next Gina (Ger) (Perugino), who captured the G1 Preis der Diana and is the second dam of the G1 Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup scorer Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal). Nuit Polaire unnamed yearling filly is by Gleneagles (Ire).
