Aidan O’Brien won his 12th Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday, but not with the horse many were expecting as Epsom Derby winner Wings Of Eagles could finish only third behind Capri in a thrilling climax to the Classic.

Only a neck and a short head separated the first three home, the John Gosden-trained Cracksman, third at Epsom, filling the runner-up spot this time.

Capri was a third success in the race for Seamie Heffernan, who landed back-to-back runnings in 2007 and 2008 on Soldier Of Fortune and Frozen Fire. After those victories he was quoted as saying that being second jockey at Ballydoyle was one of the best jobs in the world, an opinion that is unlikely to have changed.

O’Brien’s 12th win in the race came 20 years after his first with Desert King, and with Capri – who finished sixth at Epsom – hit the front two furlongs out and stayed on well to repel his challengers.

Waldgeist, the Prix du Jockey Club runner-up and a first ride in Ireland for France’s champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot, was one and a half lengths behind the favourite Wings Of Eagles in fourth.

Heffernan said: “We’ve always liked Capri since he won at Galway last year. He’s run well in some very good races. The beautiful ground and the track, which is so different to Epsom, played to his strengths. There was nowhere to hide out there and Capri saw out the trip well.”

Capri was cut to 5-1 (from 14) for the St Leger by sponsor William Hill, but according to O’Brien there are no definite plans for the winner.

He said: “We’ll wait a week or ten days before deciding where Capri might go next. I suppose we’ll consider the King George although the plan is to run Highland Reel in it.

“We’ll see what the lads want to do and it’s possible we might give Capri a break and bring him back in the autumn and it might be the same story with Wings Of Eagles, who ran a very good race and is a horse with plenty of class.”

Cracksman reversed Epsom placings with Wings Of Eagles, and despite his neck defeat Gosden was thrilled with his colt’s performance.

He said: “Our horse has run a super race. He’s still a work in progress and he’s run really well. He had to come around the outside but that’s racing. I’m thrilled with him. Pat [Smullen] gave us a very accurate report when he came in.”

Smullen said: “Cracksman never really travelled as well as I had hoped but he really got it together in the closing stages and my gut feeling is that we’ve yet to see the best of him. He should go on to better things in the coming months and should make a lovely four-year-old.”

O’Brien and Coolmore supremo John Magnier have long been fans of the Curragh racecourse and have been in favour of the Irish Derby continuing to be run at the track during its redevelopment.

And at the post-race press conference both of them referred to the race being run at the Curragh this year and again next year. “You have to suffer some pain for long-term gain. Cracksman and Waldgeist would not have run in today’s race had it been run elsewhere. It would have been just a domestic affair,” Magnier said.

O’Brien said: “We are so lucky to have a track as good as the Curragh. The situation for three-year-olds over a mile and a half gets sorted to a point at Epsom but there is no track in the world which provides as good a test over a mile and a half for three-year-olds as the Curragh.”

Gosden also said running the race at the Curragh was the right thing to do. “Leopardstown is a very good track for the one and a quarter miles of the Irish Champion Stakes but not for top one-and-a-half- mile races. It was the right decision to keep the Irish Derby here,” he said.

Galileo’s Capri Conquers the Irish Derby

Only sixth in the G1 Epsom Derby four weeks earlier, Derrick Smith’s Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) had all in his favour back at The Curragh and emerged triumphant under Seamie Heffernan in a three-way go for the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on Saturday. Sent off at 6-1, the grey who had won the G2 Beresford S. when last at this track in September was always handily-placed in second and struck for home with a quarter mile to race. As Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) made up ground relentlessly on the wide outside and the Derby hero Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) emerged between them, Capri dug deep against the rail to hold on by a neck from the Gosden runner, with the 2-1 favourite Wings of Eagles a short head behind in a thriller. “He’s an uncomplicated horse who Seamie always had great belief in, even after Epsom,” reported Aidan O’Brien whose Irish Derby tally now sits at a dozen. “He wanted to come here and ride him and we know he gets a mile and a half well and is brave. He had a lovely position through the race and Seamie paced it brilliantly and timed it to perfection. Wings of Eagles ran very well, but maybe this tough mile and a half is as far as he wants to go. He showed mile-and-a-quarter pace at Epsom where he sprinted and finished off very quickly and he might have just been outstayed.”

Capri was a solid group-class juvenile for Ballydoyle in 2016 without setting the pulse racing, but he entered winter quarters as one of the Derby colts who would deserve special attention if the ground came up easy on the first Saturday in June. After defeating Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) on debut in a maiden over an extended mile at the Galway festival in July, he followed up in the Listed Coolmore Canford Cliffs S. over an extended seven furlongs at Tipperary six days later before upstaging Yucatan (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Beresford staged on testing ground here. Signing off with a third behind Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October, he returned to be fourth under a five-pound penalty behind Rekindling in the G3 Ballysax S. over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown Apr. 8 and was third to Douglas Macarthur (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. over the same course and distance May 7.

Attracting support in the lead-up to the Derby when the rain threatened to arrive, Capri was far from disgraced when subsequently beaten less than four lengths on ground livelier than he would appreciate and it was clear he was no back-number in this. Sent up to track The Anvil (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) after the initial stages, the grey was sent past that pacemaker with stamina assured two furlongs from home and it was soon clear that he would be hard to peg back. As Ryan Moore unleashed Wings of Eagles, who had enjoyed a perfect trip under cover from his stablemates, Pat Smullen was winding up Cracksman for a sustained effort out wide. That Oppenheimer homebred was using his Frankel stride to get ever closer as the line approached, but Capri had already stolen a march and the line came in time for another golden result for Ballydoyle’s tactical nous.

Heffernan, whose group and grade 1 tally worldwide exceeds several of the leading European riders, partnered Soldier of Fortune (Ire) to glory in this in 2007 and Frozen Fire (Ger) 12 months later and commented, “He’s a horse I’ve always liked, ever since his maiden at Galway and he’s been running very well in all the trials. The open space and flat track here was ideal and Aidan’s improve little by little, so I got lucky today. To be fair to him, at Epsom I wanted to be in the first six early but he broke slowly and I had no choice but to sit in. They stacked up in front of me and I went six-wide a half-furlong too early on a staying horse, but he was still only beaten four lengths. I wanted to be handy today and it all went pretty much to plan. It’s been nearly 10 years since I won this and I was getting pretty hungry!”

Aidan O’Brien was not holding back in his praise for the stable’s second jockey, saying, “Seamus has been a part of our family for over 20 years now. He is an amazing fella–talented, dedicated, loyal and an unbelievable rider. What he did today wasn’t an easy thing to do. The pace was strong up front, and he was sitting right in the eye of the storm. He had a choice how close he followed it or not to follow it, and he knew all the fancied horses were behind him. It was a masterclass from him really. He has great experience, he’s a great fella to deal with people, has a great way about him, and we feel privileged and delighted to be working with him every day.” Capri may be due a break now, according to his trainer. “John [Magnier], Michael [Tabor] and Derrick [Smith] will have a talk about where he goes next. We were looking at Highland Reel for the King George and this horse has been busy, so he might have a rest and we could think about an autumn campaign for him.”

Cracksman’s performance was a staying one and early evidence is that the Frankels are getting further than expected, so it could be that he has a St Leger horse in his first crop. Whether that is Cracksman or not remains to be seen, but jockey Pat Smullen is certain his mount will be a major force in time. “He ran an excellent race. He got a little bit further back than we had planned, but he never really travelled through the race and showed a lot of immaturity still,” he explained. “He’s very babyish. It wasn’t ideal to have to come around one in the straight, but I just wasn’t going well enough. To his credit, he got it together and stayed on very well to the line. I thought when I got the better of Wings of Eagles I had it, but the grey horse battled away well. He’s run an excellent race. It’s unfortunate he’s got beat, but he’s a horse that will only keep progressing from here on.”

Capri hails from an esteemed Jean-Luc Lagardere dynasty, with his second dam being the G2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix de la Nonette winner and G1 Prix Vermeille second Diamilina. She is herself a daughter of the Malleret runner-up Diamonaka, a half-sister to the G2 Prix Greffulhe winner Diamond Mix (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) who produced Diamond Green (Fr). Successful in the G3 Prix La Rochette, he was also placed in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and G1 St James’s Palace S. before taking up stud duties. This family has stamina running through it the whole way, with Bauer (Ire) (Halling) almost winning the G1 Melbourne Cup and the G3 Prix Penelope scorer Diamond Dance (Dancehall) responsible for the G2 Prix de Pomone winner Diamond Tango (Fr) (Acatenango {Ger}). Capri has a 2-year-old full-brother named Cypress Creek (Ire) and a yearling full-sister.

Bated Breath’s Beckford Takes the Railway

Beckford | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Gordon Elliott has been making waves in the national hunt sphere in recent times and with his attentions temporarily turned to the flat he may have a valid Classic contender on his hands after Beckford upset the major stables here. Purchased recently by Newtown Anner Stud Farm, the bay who who had won a course-and-distance maiden on debut May 13 raced just off the early pace under Declan McDonogh. Sent to the front with over a furlong remaining, the bay stayed on to beat TDN Rising Star Verbal Dexterity, with Ballydoyle’s Murillo sticking on without seriously threatening.

The winning trainer was keeping his feet firmly on the ground afterwards. “Number one, I’m a national hunt trainer, but during the summer this keeps the staff and fills a gap,” he said. “It’s a bit of fun and although of course it is a business, national hunt is what I’m doing and I’m not going to get ahead of myself and be excited. We’ll do it again next year, but it’s not something I’m going to be doing full-time. If I had half a dozen nice ones for the flat, that’s all I want, but jumping is the game and that’s all I want to do.” Beckford is set for a tilt at the G1 Phoenix S. back over the same track and trip Aug. 13. “We thought he’d improved a good bit from the last day. I haven’t got enough of them to know, but we liked what we were seeing,” Elliott added. “We thought he was working well, but we haven’t got anything to work him with. He was probably in front plenty soon enough, but he’s tough and he stays. I’m delighted for everyone that he’s won, especially the new owners. It’s the first horse I’ve had for them and Maurice Regan’s father and mother are here today–it’s the first time I’ve met them. When you win you are always good, but in fairness Declan is a big part of all these two-year-olds, where we work and what we do, so I’m delighted for him. The Phoenix Stakes is where he’ll go now, all being well.”

Beckford’s prospects of staying a mile and being a factor in the Guineas are helped not only by the manner of this performance but also by his pedigree. Despite his sire being a speed merchant, it is early days to pigeon-hole Bated Breath who is a half-brother to Cityscape (GB) (Selkirk) and Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) who stayed 10 furlongs. Beckford’s second dam was a multiple winner who got 11 furlongs well and was third in the Listed Harvest S. over slightly further. She is the dam of the G3 Prestige S. and G3 Thoroughbred S. winner Malabar (GB) (Raven’s Pass) and also this year’s G3 Huxley S. runner-up Poet’s Word (Ire) (Poet’s Voice {GB}) who is a true middle-distance performer still in line for a tilt at Saturday’s G1 Eclipse S. The third dam, Inchyre, is a half-sister to the accomplished seven-furlong specialist and miler Inchinor (GB) whose black-type-earning progeny all stayed at least a mile and a half with Ursa Major (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) winning the G3 Irish St Leger Trial S. over 14 furlongs. Also from the family of the GI E. P. Taylor S.-winning champion grass mare Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and the G3 Give Thanks S. and G3 Noblesse S. winner and G1 Irish and Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Venus de Milo (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), the dam has a yearling filly by Mukhadram (GB).

Zonza, who was an Apr. 15 debut winner going five furlongs at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat, registered a second score upped to 5 1/2 panels at Maisons-Laffitte last time May 17, and continued on the upgrade with a career high in this black-type bow. Positioned in a handy fifth after the initial strides, she came under pressure inside the final quarter mile to challenge at the eighth pole and was ridden out in the closing stages to comfortably assert superiority. “She is a filly with a lot of heart, she has improved with every run and becoming a Group winner is a great achievement,” beamed trainer Didier Guillemin. “If she comes out of the race well, and if travelling back and forth to our South-West base doesn’t take to much out of her, I imagine the [July 23 G2] Prix Robert Papin [at Maisons-Laffitte] might be next on the list. Improving on a share of third to move into a stalking second at halfway, he launched his bid inside the final quarter mile to lead approaching the eighth pole and was ridden out in the latter stages to hold African Ride for a second black-type score. “He wasn’t as impressive as last time, but I had to commit earlier than I wanted to and he responded very well when threatened [by African Ride] on his outside,” said winning rider Mickael Barzalona. “He has now won twice at this level and his only disappointment was when his saddle slipped after doing too much in front in the Poulains. He’s a very good horse and I imagine he’ll now go back up in class. I’m sure his entourage will know what to do with him.”

Home Of The Brave | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Successful in the Listed European Free H. over this trip on the Rowley Mile course here in April 2015, Home of the Brave captured The Curragh’s G3 Minstrel S. three months later only to be stripped of that prize due to a prohibited substance. Beginning his four-year-old campaign with a win in the Listed King Richard III S. at Leicester, the chestnut was bought by Godolphin and rewarded the move with a success in the G3 John of Gaunt S. at Haydock. Second in the G2 Lennox S. at Goodwood in July and in the G2 Hungerford S. at Newbury in August, he was 11th in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint before returning to beat the subsequent G2 Duke of York S. winner and G1 Diamond Jubilee S. runner-up Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in the latest edition of the King Richard III Apr. 29. Leading the duo Jungle Cat and Breton Rock racing stand’s side but behind the overall leader Ibn Malik (Ire) (Raven’s Pass), he got to the front approaching the quarter pole and despite the harrying effort of fellow Godolphin colour-bearer Jungle Cat held on to register a fifth black-type success all at this trip.

Hugo Palmer said, “You can never expect anything, but it was as we hoped for. My heart sank when I saw the 70 millimetres of rain fall midweek, but it is amazing what a racecourse Newmarket is as it took the rain that well. He has been a pretty consistent horse all his life, especially in the early part of the season. He trains on his own and never works with another horse. James Doyle has ridden him almost every time and he understands him. I think we will give him a short break and head for the Lennox [at Goodwood Aug. 1], as that is the obvious race.”

Home of the Brave’s dam is a half-sister to another who enjoyed his best days at this distance in Suggestive (GB) (Reprimand {GB}), who also captured this race and was runner-up in the G2 Lennox S. Also a half to another by Reprimand in the G3 Prix de Conde winner Rashbag (GB), she is connected to the G3 Princess Elizabeth S. scorer Bay Street (GB) (Grundy {Ire}), dam of the G3 Prix de Flore-winning highweight Bex (Explodent) and five other black-type performers. Bex was also responsible for the same number of black-type runners headed by the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris-winning sire Crimson Quest (Ire) and the listed-placed Bathilde (Ire) (Generous {Ire}), who herself is the dam of the G1 Dubai Duty Free hero Al Shemali (GB) (Medicean {GB}) and G2 Henry II S. scorer Tungsten Strike (Smart Strike). Also from the family of the South African champion Bad Girl Runs (SAf) (Western Winter) and the Singapore Derby winner and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic third Falstaff (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), Blissful Beat has a yearling filly by Olympic Glory (Ire).

Mayson Filly Stays Perfect In the Empress

2nd at NMT, Lst Stk, 26000 Listed Betway Empress Fillies’ S. (6f) Winner: Dance Diva (GB), f, 2 by Mayson (GB)

Dance Diva | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Successful over this trip at Redcar May 30 and at Haydock June 14, Dance Diva earned the reward for her professionalism by trebling her tally in this first try at black-type. Settled behind the leading trio throughout the early stages, the bay seized the advantage with two furlongs remaining and stayed on as Maggies Angel threatened on the uphill climb to the line. “She’s entered in the [July] sales in a couple of weeks, but if she goes there or not I’ve no idea,” explained John Marsh, assistant racing manager for Cheveley Park Stud. “In the paddock she looked the biggest filly and she is really progressing nicely. This was the plan.” Out of the useful Dance East, who captured a nin-furlong handicap at the Glorious Goodwood meeting in 2010, the winner hails from the family of the G1 Racing Post Trophy-winning sire Saratoga Springs. The dam also has a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire).

Irlanda: #Capri svetta nell’Irish Derby, il 12° per Aidan O’Brien. Cracksman e Wings Of Eagles alle piazze

Solo sesta Vik The Billy.

Il tempo finale è 58.56s (slow by 1.66s).

Obiettivo Papin G2, Calvados G2 o Morny G1.
