Cloud Computing after his Preakness victory

With the glow of the sun pink on the horizon and most of the Pimlico Race Course stakes barn just beginning to rustle with activity, Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Cloud Computing departed from Baltimore to return to his Belmont Park home base May 21, just hours after his 13-1 upset in the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Trainer Chad Brown was not at Pimlico the morning after his first Triple Crown classic score having already returned to New York the night before. Brown said after the Preakness May 20 that a June 10 Belmont Stakes (G1) run was “a possibility” for Cloud Computing and reiterated that stance Sunday.

“We haven’t ruled it out,” Brown said. “We’re just going to evaluate the horse this week and probably by next weekend we may have a decision.”

Trainer Mark Casse was hands-on with 2016 2-year-old champion male and second-place Preakness finisher Classic Empire the morning after. Manning the shank as the Pioneerof the Nile   colt got his legs rinsed Sunday, Casse said a Belmont run is under consideration.

“Right now I’d say there’s a very good shot he’s going to run in the Belmont,” Casse said. “But we won’t make that (decision yet). We’ll see how he acts and does everything.”

Casse said if Classic Empire does run in the 1 1/2-mile classic, an equipment change may be in order. Because he felt the colt may have been caught by surprise late in the stretch by Cloud Computing, Casse said removing blinkers to keep Classic Empire engaged could be an option.

“If I could do it all over again, the only thing I would do differently is I would take the blinkers off him. I’m not so sure how much he saw that horse coming,” Casse said of Classic Empire’s final furlong in the Preakness. The Arkansas Derby (G1) winner had a three-length advantage at the eighth pole, but lost by a head at the wire. “He dug back in, but the other horse had some momentum on him, and if you watch him going on out, he took off again.”

BALAN: Cloud Computing Wears Down Classic Empire in Preakness

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Always Dreaming came out of the Preakness healthy, but was still a bit unsure as to why the son of Bodemeister   backed up so severely late and finished eighth.

“He’s healthy and happy,” Pletcher said. “We’ll head back to Belmont … and regroup. When I spoke to the ownership after the race yesterday, we all decided we wouldn’t make a decision (regarding his next start) until we got him home and evaluated him. … Talking to (jockey John Velazquez) a little more, he was concerned down the backside that (Always Dreaming) wasn’t taking him there the same way he was taking him there in the Kentucky Derby and Florida Derby (G1).

“Other than that, I don’t have a good explanation. He came back healthy and looks good. … The surface—I hate to use that as an excuse, because he’s run well over all kinds of different surfaces, (but) this one was a little bit different, because it was in that drying-out phase. But it wasn’t his day, I suppose.”

In for the Belmont are third-place Preakness finisher Senior Investment and fourth-place Lookin At Lee, who will both depart for New York Sunday.

“We just used this as a prep race,” joked Senior Investment’s trainer, Kenny McPeek. “We felt all along he wanted a mile and a half, but the Belmont is tougher than this sometimes, because the pace can be much slower. Does it suit him? He’s just going to keep coming. … We made a decision yesterday before the race, if he finishes fourth or better, he punches his ticket.”

Trainer Steve Asmussen said both of his Preakness runners—Lookin At Lee and Hence—exited the race healthy, but only Lookin At Lee will continue on the Triple Crown trail.

“We’re just going to regroup with (Hence). I don’t think the Belmont distance or the stage suits him right now,” Asmussen said. “Lookin At Lee is vanning on to Belmont this morning.”

Also under consideration for a Belmont try are Preakness runners Multiplier (sixth) and Conquest Mo Money (seventh).

Multiplier left Pimlico early Sunday and is en route to Kentucky. Trainer Brendan Walsh said a Belmont run for the Illinois Derby (G3) winner is “possible.”

Conquest Mo Money is staying local, at least for the time being, and will soon be stabled at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md., where he will train for a potential Belmont start.

“I think we’ll go (to the Belmont), but it’s not 100%” said Conquest Mo Money’s trainer, Miguel Hernandez.

One horse who will definitely not be making the trip to New York is Gunnevera. Trainer Antonio Sano said the Dialed In   colt bled for the first time in his 11-race career during his fifth-place Preakness run, and that he’ll return to his South Florida base with an eye on a start at Saratoga Race Course, where he won the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) in 2016.

“We’re going to take him back to (Florida), give him a nice rest, then take him back to Saratoga,” said Alessandro Sano, the son of Antonio Sano who also serves as his father’s assistant.

Classic Success For Poet’s Voice Colt At Cologne

Off the mark on debut at Dusseldorf Mar. 26, Poetic Dream went on to be third behind the useful Mankib (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) in a well-contested conditions event at Maisons-Laffitte Apr. 18 and made another step forward to overcome adversity and take this Classic. Settled in mid-division early, the bay was denied a run in the straight as the British raider Lockheed threatened to get away along with Empire of the Star. When the gap finally came on the fence, he was able to make up significant ground and reel in Lockheed in the final yards in what amounted to an impressive finishing burst.

Zain Al Boldan, who captured the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial by six lengths and finished third in the 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy, is a half-sister to the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc-winning miler and sire Svedov (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere). Their respective dam Carla was a dual listed scorer and is a half to another Edmond Blanc scorer in Golani (Ire) (Nikos {GB}), as well as to the dam of the G2 Prix de Malleret scorer Never Forget (Fr) (Westerner {GB}). Zain Al Boldan also has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old filly by Dawn Approach (Ire) and a yearling colt by Sea the Moon (Ger).

Caravaggio | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Off since winning the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh in August, Caravaggio returned with a vengeance to issue a shot across the bows of his potential opponents in the June 23 G1 Commonwealth Cup. Proven on ground with some cut in, having overcome those conditions to win the Listed Marble Hill S. at The Curragh last May and G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot in June, the grey sat fifth early with Ryan Moore wearing an air of understandable confidence. Once shaken up, he was able to gain the lead without a major effort with a furlong remaining and draw away to beat Psychedelic Funk by the same margin that he had at last year’s Royal meeting. “He was always an unbelievably quick horse and although he never showed anything at home that said he wouldn’t stay a mile, we were afraid that if we trained him for it he might lose some of his brilliance,” Aidan O’Brien said. “I’m delighted that’s the route the lads decided to go, as we have never had a quicker one. His raw power is incredible, really. He was just ready to start today and we were a little bit worried, as he was a good bit above what he was last year [in weight]. He could go as short in trip as is possible, but we’ll go to the Commonwealth now.”

Caravaggio is a half-brother to the GII Gallant Bloom H. winner My Jen who descends from the stakes-winning and GII Black Helen H. runner-up Silver in Flight, who in turn is the second dam of the GIII Lexington S. and GIII Lawrence Realization H. winner and GI Secretariat S. third Sharp Performance (Kris S.). Silver In Flight’s stakes-winning half-sister Stark Winter (Graustark) is the dam of the four-times grade I-winning sire Bien Bien and the GIII Long Branch S. and GIII Royal Palm H.-winning sire Dr. Schwartzman. This is also the family of the GI Donn H. winner Spring At Last and the GI Las Virgenes S. heroine Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band), who was responsible for this stable’s group performers by Galileo (Ire), Foundry (Ire) and Housesofparliament (Ire), the latter of which was third in last year’s G1 St Leger. Mekko Hokte also has a yearling full-sister to Caravaggio and a 2017 colt by American Pharoah.

Decisive Listed Win For Mastercraftsman’s Alpha Centauri

4th at NAS, Lst Stk, 65000 Listed Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies’ Sprint S. (6f) Winner: Alpha Centauri (Ire), f, 2 by Mastercraftsman (Ire)

Alpha Centauri | Racingfotos.com

By Tom Frary

Earning TDN Rising Star status with a defeat of Actress on debut over this course and distance at the start of the month, Alpha Centauri again put that rival to the sword to earn a trip to Royal Ascot. In second initially, the imposing grey was in front before halfway and responded to the threat from her Ballydoyle nemesis passing the quarter pole to lengthen clear and register a commanding success. “She’s so relaxed and takes everything in her stride,” trainer Jessie Harrington said. “She hardly breaks sweat. If she goes to Ascot it would be for the [G3] Albany [S. June 23]. She’s such an easy filly to train and she has some stride on her.”

The first foal out of the extremely well-connected Alpha Lupi was another smart juvenile in Tenth Star (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who captured the Listed Golden Fleece S. and was runner-up in the G2 Royal Lodge S. for Ballydoyle. The dam did not make it to the track, but as a daughter of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois heroine East of the Moon had substantial value to the Niarchos family. Among her siblings are four black-type performers headed by the G3 Prix d’Arenberg scorer Moon Driver (Mr. Prospector), with the dual listed-placed Canda (Storm Cat) going on to produce the G3 Horris Hill S.-winning sire Evasive (GB). East of the Moon’s dam is the indefatigable Miesque, heroine of an astounding ten races at the highest level in Europe and the States including the 1000 Guineas, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Prix Jacques le Marois. Her full-brother to East of the Moon is no less than Kingmambo, himself a leading sire and the winner of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, G1 St James’s Palace S. and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, while her descendants feature another Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero in Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein), who emulated his third dam by also capturing the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac-winning European champion Rumplestiltskin (Ire) (Danehill) and her G1 Yorkshire Oaks-winning daughter Tapestry (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Alpha Lupi also has a yearling filly by So You Think (NZ).

True Blue Moon | Racing Post

By Sean Cronin

True Blue Moon bested Dali (Scat Daddy) by a half length in his Apr. 12 debut going five panels at Dundalk, but was usurped for favouritism by that re-opposing rival and was let go at a generous 8-1 for this black-type debut. Steadied to race in a handy fourth after an alert getaway, the grey was shaken up when shuffled back one spot at the quarter-mile marker and quickened smartly under continued urging inside the final furlong to assert for a career high “He won nicely first time out and we intended going for a winners’ race afterwards, but he had a little setback and we ended up coming straight here,” explained trainer Joseph O’Brien. “They went a good gallop, he’s won nicely and I’m delighted with him. We’ll have to go down the Royal Ascot road, but I don’t yet know which race we’ll go for. He could stick to five furlongs, but we’ll decide closer to the time.”

True Blue Moon is the seventh winner, and first stakes scorer, from eight runners for Fancy Intense (GB) (Peintre Celebre), whose dam Joyeuse Entree (GB) (Kendor {Fr}) landed the G3 Prix d’Aumale as a juvenile. Joyeuse Entree is also the dam of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains-winning sire and G1 Prix Morny and G1 Grand Criterium runner-up Tin Horse (Ire) (Sakhee), and Listed Criterium de l’Ouest victrix Becomes You (GB) (Lomitas {GB}), who also ran third in the G3 Prix de Conde. Joyeuse Entree is a granddaughter of Eglantine (Fr) (Lightning {Fr}), whose other descendants are headed by G3 Prix de Flore heroine Miss Salvador (Fr) (Smadoun {Fr}). Fancy Intense has also produced an as yet unnamed yearling filly by Canford Cliffs (Ire).

Coming Up In Korean Racing

by gyongmaman

The Korean Derby is now behind us and we won’t be getting a Triple Crown winner this year. We have to wait until July to see if impressive Derby winner Final Boss can win the Minister’s Cup too but in the meantime, we have a big month ahead of us. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up in June and July in Korean racing.

FinalBossDerby

June International Weekend (Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th)

The big one is of course the Korea Cup & Sprint in September but to mark the start of summer, the first weekend of June sees plenty of good racing. On the Saturday there will be excahnge races with the Selangor Turf ClubTurkey Jockey Club and China Horse Industry Association before two big group races on Sunday:

Sunday June 4 – SBS Sports Sprint (KOR G3 – Sprint Series), Seoul: The 2nd leg of the Sprint Series doubles up as this year’s edition of the Korea vs Japan race. Success Story won the Busan Ilbo Cup, the first leg of the series, and he is expected to be in Seoul to try to make it two out of two in advance of the final leg, the Korea Sprint, in September. Last year’s winner Perdido Pomeroy is also expected to be there but with Power Blade now likely to stay home and Busan Ilbo 2nd place-getter Seoul Bullet spelled, Busan’s challenge is not as strong as usual. That gives opportunities to Seoul horses including Brian Dean’s Choegangja, who is 5 for 5 for the Aussie handler and could well give Dean a chance to return to his old haunt of Kranji for the KRA Trophy in July.

Currently there are two Japan-trained entrants for the race; Kimon Avalon who ran a solid 5th in the race last year, and Party Dress, a winner of 5 from 21, both trained by Arayama Katsunori.

Sunday June 4 – Ttukseom Cup (KOR G2 – Queens Tour), Seoul - The Queens’ Tour to decide the year’s champion filly or mare gets underway with the shortest race of the series, the 1400M Ttukseom Cup. This division is not especially strong at the moment and favourites are likely to include last year’s Jeju Governor’s Cup winner Indian Star and KNN Cup winner Supreme Magic.

Sunday June 11 – Korean Oaks (KOR G2) Busan - There were 27 early entries for the fillies’ Classic  and we’ll get a clearer picture in the next week or so. Nevertheless, Ice Marine is set to be favourite. She won a valuable trial for the race in March and while her 6th place in the KRA Cup Mile meant she didn’t go for the Derby, she’s the standout so far. Plenty of unexposed ones could test her though.

They’re followed by:

Sunday June 28: Sports Chosun Cup (L) Seoul
Sunday July 9: Busan Mayor’s Cup (KOR G3) Busan - Informally known as the “Summer Grand Prix” it is, ater the Oaks, Busan’s 2nd most valuable race of the year. This year it will be run over 1800M. Past winners include Dangdae Bulpae, Tough Win (twice) and Gamdonguibada.
Sunday July 16: Minister’s Cup (KOR G2) Seoul - There’s no Triple Crown on the line this year but the final Classic of the year still has its intrigues. Final Boss’s Derby win was rated lower than that of Power Blade last year so can he burnish his credentials before taking on older, proven horses later in the season?
Sunday July 23: KNN Cup (KOR G3) Busan - They step up to a mile for the 2nd leg of the Queens’ Tour.
Sunday Jul 30: Ilgan Sports (L) Seoul

Night Racing

The nightracing season is shorter this year than last. From June, Friday meetings at Busan will switch to their night race times. Seoul will run Night meetings on Saturdays and twilight meetings on Sundays in July and August only.
