DOMENICA 11 SETTEMBRE 2016 Irlanda: #Almanzor domina le Irish Champion Stakes a Leopardstown. Battute le femmine Found e Minding

Incredibile.

French Derby hero Almanzor just champion

BY LEWIS PORTEOUS,  10 SEP 2016

Report: Leopardstown, Saturday,   QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1) 3yo+, 1m2f

ALMANZOR proved himself a champion as the French Derby winner got the better of Found in a stirring finish to a vintage renewal, featuring eight individual Group 1 winners who boasted 15 successes at the highest level.

RELATED LINKS,  Full result

In a field that included dual Derby hero Harzand and six-time Group 1 heroine Minding, Almanzor travelled like the good horse he clearly is before quickening down the outer under big-race rider Christophe Soumillon to outpoint Frankie Dettori and Found.

It was perhaps not the two horses many had anticipated would be battling out the finish but both Almanzor and Found were already proven at the top level and there was certainly no fluke about the impressive winner.

While he had a clear passage, Almanzor, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, had to make his challenge from off the pace and out wide – but his acceleration was superior to his rivals as he surged past Breeders’ Cup winner Found close home.

“It was a great feeling,” said winning rider Soumillon. “It was a very high-rated race with a lot of champions. We know how good he is but you never know when you go overseas for the first time.

“He was very relaxed today and when I asked him to quicken he gave me a great turn of foot and won like a champion.”

The winner was cut to 5-1 (from 16-1) for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget said: “We’ll see but he looked to have quite an easy race, but it is a Group 1.

“When I saw the field before the race, with all these champions, I thought the 7-1 was a bit too short, but after the race, the betting was good! We’ll see if he goes to Ascot or Chantilly for the Arc.”

Runner-up Found (right) still on for the Arc

PICTURE: Alain Barr (racingpost.com/photos)

Harzand was sent off favourite to add another success to his dream season but the warning signs were flashing from an early stage, with Pat Smullen rowing away to maintain an early position as he dropped back in trip.

He was later examined by the Turf Club veterinary officer and reported to have been struck into behind.

Minding travelled more kindly and although locked away on the rail where space was at a premium, she appeared to be in the clear soon enough if good enough, but ultimately came up short as she took on the boys for the first time. Admittedly she lost little in defeat back in third.

The runner-up looks destined for the Arc after another gutsy performance and trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “I’m delighted with both Found and Minding.

“Minding got a couple of fairly tough bumps but that’s the way it is in a big field like that and she ran very well.

“The plan always with Found was to go for the Arc after this and I’d imagine that will probably be the way.”

Doncaster: Harbour Law vince a sorpresa il St Leger per Laura Mongan. Caduto Idaho ai 600 dal palo. Poker Atzeni in giornata

A Doncaster succede sempre qualcosa.

Churchill ran out an impressive winner of the National Stakes

Churchill boosts Classic credentials in National

BY JACK HAYNES,  11 SEP 2016

Report: Curragh, Sunday,   Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Group 1) 7f, 2yo

CHURCHILL justified his position at the head of the 2,000 Guineas market with victory in the Group 1 National Stakes – leaving the impression a step up to a mile, and possibly further, should suit the son of Galileo.

RELATED LINKS,  National Stakes result

Sky Bet cut Churchill to 7-2 favourite (from 7) for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas next year and also 10-1 market leader (from 16) for the Investec Derby following his convincing four-and-a-quarter length win over Mehmas, while Paddy Power made him 5-2 favourite (from 6) for the Newmarket Classic and 6-1 jolly (from 20) for the Epsom feature.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “He’s a very exciting horse. He settled and he quickened and I thought that he went like a real miler, but Ryan [Moore] was adamant that a mile and a quarter would be no problem to him next year either.

“He can be idle when he hits the front so it was lovely when Frankie’s horse [Mehmas] eyeballed him and kind of leaned into him up the run in because that’s exactly what he wanted. He would have learned a lot today.”

How it panned out

Stablemate Lancaster Bomber quickened the tempo under Donnacha O’Brien with three furlongs to run, momentarily appearing to catch many of the runners out, though Ryan Moore went through the many gears aboard Churchill and the pair soon asserted their authority on the field.

Richard Hannon’s star two-year-old Mehmas once again posted an admirable effort in top-class company in second, while William Haggas’s Lockheed ran well to take third, staying on well again in the final furlong.

Short-term plans

Churchill has several entries in the big autumn juvenile contests but O’Brien revealed plans are still fluid in the wake of his latest win.

“I’m not too sure if that will be him finished for the season now or not,” he said. “We have been keeping him busy but he is progressing from each start and he is learning a lot. He has a lot of speed and we always felt that he was a Guineas horse.”

SABATO 10 SETTEMBRE 2016 Allevamento: Ci lascia #Linamix, aveva 29 anni.

Ci lascia all’età di 29 anni Linamix (Mendez).
