Rain the only concern for Australia team

 TODAY’S RACING PREVIEW BY TONY O’HEHIR7:49AM 28 JUN 2014

AIDAN O’BRIEN’S name is written like no other across the history of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, having landed a record ten victories, and Australia is hot favourite to make it a football team’s worth of winners for the master of Ballydoyle.

RELATED LINKS

O’Brien has spoken in glowing terms about Australia ever since the colt’s impressive Group 3 win at Leopardstown in September, and the son of Galileo went a long way towards justifying his huge reputation when winning the Derby at Epsom three weeks ago.

Last year O’Brien’s bid for an eighth consecutive win in today’s Classic failed when third-placed Festive Cheer was the closest of his two runners, but Australia will be long odds-on to become the 17th horse to complete the Epsom-Curragh double back at the track where his career began with an unlucky defeat a year ago.

Australia provided O’Brien with a fifth Derby success and the trainer has run all his previous winners of the Epsom Classic in the Irish equivalent, with only Ruler Of The World 12 months failing to complete the double.

O’Brien said: “Good to firm or good ground will be fine for Australia. We just don’t want a lot of rain to make it in any way soft. Obviously he hasn’t done a lot since Epsom, but he doesn’t take much work. We’re happy with him.”

O’Brien saddles over half of the Classic field as Australia is joined by Geoffrey Chaucer, Kingfisher and Orchestra, while Kingston Hill, Fascinating Rock and Ponfeigh complete the line-up.

The ground at the Curragh has been described as good to firm. The track’s general manager Paul Hensey tweeted: “The ground @curraghrace remains good to firm. Both courses watered overnight. Forecast dry.”

Going report

Curragh: Good to firm
Newcastle: Good to firm
Newmarket: Good to firm
Windsor: Good to firm (watered)
Chester: Good to soft
Doncaster: Good to firm
Lingfield: Turf – good to firm (watered); All-weather – standard

Key stats

Jeremy Noseda is 9-18 in 3yo+ handicaps at Windsor over the last four seasons (+18.42 to £1 level stakes) and saddlesValbchek (4.10)

Since 2009 William Haggas has form figures of 11514111741 with his 2yos at Chester (+£10.92 to £1 stakes). Pillar Boxgoes at 2.10.

Late doubt over Kingston’s Curragh bid

BY BRUCE JACKSON AND ANDREW DIETZ1:46PM 27 JUN 2014

THE eagerly anticipated rematch between Investec Derby one-two Australia and Kingston Hill in Saturday’s Irish equivalent might not go ahead after Kingston Hill’s trainer Roger Varianexpressed his concerns about the likelihood of fast ground at the Curragh.

RELATED LINKS

Although 5mm of rain fell at the track overnight the ground remained good to firm on the eve of the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Classic and Varian is adamant he wants to see more rain fall before he walks the course on Saturday morning.

“We need a bit more rain for him,” the trainer told the Racing Post. “I’m going out to Ireland tonight and will look at the ground in the morning and assess things then.

“The worry from reports I’m getting is that is still pretty quick and that is a concern and I’m not going to run him on ground I am not happy with.

“It doesn’t need to be soft for him to run – decent good ground will be fine for him.”

The prospect of significant rain before the Irish Derby, which is due off at 5.30pm, looks slim with a risk of showers on Friday being replaced by a drier outlook.

Speaking on At The Races, Curragh general manager Paul Hensey said: “We’ve had a sunny morning and are expecting a shower or two throughout the day.

“The Derby track is a touch quicker than the track we race on tonight and we would welcome some rain.”

William Hill make Australia their 4-11 favourite with Kingston Hill, whose three wins have come with soft in the going description, at 7-2 and the remaining five contenders priced at 16-1 or bigger.

Poi vinse. Nel 2009 Sea The Stars, per John Oxx, invece non corse proprio per le avverse condizioni meteo ma li a ridere fu Padre Aidan con Fame And Glory. In caso ci fosse qualche problema, comunque, ne avrà altri 6. Solo 6?
1 5 Australia (GB) Galileo (Ire) J O’Brien A O’Brien
2 3 Fascinating Rock (Ire) Fastnet Rock (Aus) Smullen Weld
3 6 Geoffrey Chaucer Montjeu (Ire) Heffernan A O’Brien
4 7 Kingfisher (Ire) Galileo (Ire) O’Donoghue A O’Brien
5 4 Kingston Hill (GB) Mastercraftsman (Ire) Atzeni Varian
6 2 Orchestra (Ire) Galileo (Ire) Hussey A O’Brien
7 1 Ponfeigh (Ire) Teofilo (Ire) McDonogh Oxx
